A bath bomb is mostly bicarbonate of soda and citric acid pressed together with colour and scent. Dry, the two sit quietly; dropped into a run bath, they react, and the fizz carries the colour, the scent and any oils out into the water. Mo Constantine, one of the founders of Lush, invented it in 1989. Some are scented with a single essential oil, others shaped like cupcakes and doughnuts or studded with petals.

Most sets add essential oils, and some shea butter or sea salt as well. Keep the bombs dry until bath time: damp air starts the fizz early, so the box is better kept out of the bathroom’s steam between baths.

What matters

  • Named scents, so you know what each bath will smell of.
  • A weight for each bomb, rather than just ‘large’.
  • Each bomb wrapped on its own, so the rest keep their scent.

#1Aofmee Bath Bomb Gift Set (6 bath bombs)

Under £10

Best overall

9.4/10Picked Rating

Six handmade bath bombs, each one different, that release layers of colour and scent as they fizz. Aofmee makes them with shea and cocoa butter, essential oils and vitamins A, E and F, and says they’re vegan, cruelty-free and suitable for all ages.

What owners say: Owners love the scents and colours and the look of each bomb, and rate the set’s value. They like how the bath feels afterwards, and say children particularly enjoy them.

A closer look: Drop the bomb in once the bath is full and, as the fizzing slows, sweep a hand through the water to mix the layers of colour. With each of the six different, the box is a good way to find the colours and scents you prefer before choosing a bigger set.

  • Fizzes in layers of colour
  • Handmade
  • Vitamins A, E and F
  • Essential oils

#2STNTUS Bath Bomb Gift Set (7 bath bombs)

£10–£20

9.3/10Picked Rating

Seven bombs in seven named scents, from rose and orange to ylang-ylang and freesia: a cupcake, two doughnuts, a white bomb with a pink heart, cubes and rounds.

What owners say: Owners say they fizz well and look lovely, with vivid colours and a heady fragrance, and like how soft their skin feels after the bath.

A closer look: Seven bombs make a week of baths, one a night. The cupcake and doughnuts are the showpieces, so save them for an evening when there’s time to watch them fizz, and start on the plainer cubes and rounds; the white bomb with the pink heart makes a neat one to finish the box on.

  • Rose, orange, ylang-ylang, freesia
  • Shea and cocoa butter
  • Essential oils

#3OFUN Bath Bombs and Scented Candles Gift Set (5 bath bombs, 4 candles)

£10–£20

Best with candles

9.3/10Picked Rating

Bath and candlelight in one box: five large bath bombs in lavender, ocean, rose, osmanthus and jasmine, and four soy-wax candles in magnolia, lotus, vanilla and mango. Each bomb is wrapped on its own, the set comes in a presentation box, and OFUN says the soy wax burns without acrid smoke.

What owners say: Owners say both the bombs and the candles smell rich and that the set looks pretty out of the box. They think it good value.

Heads up: Stand the candles on a flat, dry spot away from towels and the edge of the bath, and never leave them burning unattended.

A closer look: Light one of the candles as the taps run, so the bathroom is scented before the bomb goes in. Pairing them up is half the fun: lavender with the vanilla candle at the end of a long day, rose beside magnolia for something more floral. Trimming a candle’s wick short before each lighting helps it burn cleanly.

  • Each bomb wrapped separately
  • Candles burn without acrid smoke
  • Magnolia, lotus, vanilla, mango candles

Best for: A bath by candlelight

#4Lanwexy 8 Large Bath Bombs

Under £10

9.2/10Picked Rating

Named scents from rose and jasmine to blueberry and mint, in eight large bombs made with sea salt, shea butter, coconut oil and essential oils; some carry flower petals or edible candy. Each one comes wrapped to keep its scent until its turn.

What owners say: Owners like the scents and the mix of shapes, find them well made and good-looking, and are pleased with the price. The fizz is hit and miss, though, some getting plenty and others not a single bubble.

A closer look: With a scent for most moods, it’s easy to pick one for the evening: lavender or jasmine to wind down, lemon or orange for something brighter. Lanwexy pitches them at normal and dry skin, and a drain guard keeps any petals out of the plughole when the bath empties.

  • Sea salt and coconut oil
  • Shea butter and essential oils
  • For normal and dry skin

Best for: Winding down or perking up

#5Efloral 12 Bath Bombs in a Retro Wooden Box

£20–£30

Best premium

9.2/10Picked Rating

Twelve big bombs, about 120g each, packed in a wooden box that can be kept once they’re used. Efloral names its nine scents for moods, Courage for lemon, Energy for coconut and Harmony for green tea among them, and makes them with essential oils for dry skin.

What owners say: Owners like the soft pastel colours, the scents and the size of each bomb, and think the set well priced. Several, though, find they take a while to dissolve.

A closer look: At about 120g, one bomb is plenty for a full bath; drop it in while the water is still running so it has a head start on the fizz. Keep the box out of the bathroom’s steam between baths, and once the last has gone, it makes a home for odds and ends.

  • Scents named for moods
  • Made for dry skin
  • Essential oils
  • Keep the box afterwards

Best for: Full baths and a box to keep

#6TTRWIN 12 Vegan Bath Bombs Gift Set

Under £10

Best budget

9.0/10Picked Rating

Every one of the twelve bombs is scented with a single essential oil: lavender, rose, peppermint, lemon, citronella or orange. TTRWIN says they’re vegan and safe for children, and each comes wrapped in two layers to keep it fresh. They’re made to float and spin as they fizz.

What owners say: Owners say they work well and smell lovely, like how they look and think the price fair. Some find them far smaller than expected, though, and reports on how well they fizz and colour the water are mixed.

A closer look: Thanks to the double wrapping, a few can be handed out at a time, for a sleepover or a guest bathroom, without the rest losing their scent. Unwrap each only once the bath is run, as the wrapping keeps the oil from fading, and with one oil to a bomb it’s easy to tell which scents you like best.

  • Floats and spins while fizzing
  • One essential oil per bomb
  • Safe for children, says TTRWIN
