The one thing to get right is the phone. Apple's AirTag and UGREEN's tag use Apple's Find My network, so they need an iPhone; Samsung's SmartTag2 is made for Galaxy phones; Tile works with both, and the Chipolo works with Find My or with Google's Find Hub on Android.
Close by, each one rings so you can follow the sound. Further away, it shows up on a map when it passes near other phones on the same network, which is why the size of the network matters.

UGREEN FineTrack Tracker Tag (Apple Find My)

It uses Apple's Find My network just as an AirTag does, for much less, and its CR2032 battery lasts over two years. Cheap enough to put one on every set of keys in the house.

Heads up: Check they have an iPhone: it works with Apple's Find My only, not Android.
A closer look: There's no app to download: it adds straight into Find My on an iPhone, and the left-behind alert pops up if you walk off without it. Unlike an AirTag it has its own keyring hole, but no water rating, so it's best on keys and bags rather than anything that might go for a swim.
