A car polisher runs a foam or wool pad and compound across the paintwork. Most swirl marks sit only in the clear coat, the thin see-through layer over the colour, so polishing can take them away. A dual action (random orbital) machine moves the pad in an offset orbit as it spins, so it never dwells in one spot; a rotary only spins, and can build up heat if held in one place.

Detailing guides usually suggest dual action for a first polisher, as it’s gentler on the paint. Mains machines run as long as the job takes; cordless ones leave no lead to drag round the car, and a bare tool comes without batteries. Start slowly, keep the pad flat and moving, and try a hidden area first.

What matters

  • A smaller orbit for control on curves, a larger one for big panels.
  • A range of speeds that starts low enough to spread the compound.
  • A second handle, for steady two-handed control.
  • Pads, compounds and spare carbon brushes in the box save buying extras.

#1SPTA DA780 Dual Action Polisher Kit (125mm)

£75–£100

Best overall

9.0/10Picked Rating

A 15mm-orbit dual action polisher with electronics that keep the speed constant, sold as a full kit: coarse and fine compounds, foam and wool pads in two sizes, and 24 sanding discs. The RYOBI below has the higher score but comes with no battery or charger, while this one runs from the mains.

What owners say: Owners find it cuts a full day of hand polishing down to a couple of hours, and appreciate how much comes in the kit, though they are split on how long it lasts.

A closer look: Spread the compound on a low speed, then turn the dial up to work it in, keeping the pad flat on the paint: SPTA sets low speeds for waxing, the middle for polishing and the top for defects. Spare carbon brushes and two spanners come in the box for when the motor needs them.

  • Speed stays constant
  • Spare carbon brushes and spanners
  • D-handle and side handle

#2RYOBI 18V ONE+ Dual Action Polisher R18P-0 (bare tool)

£119.99 RRP

Best for ONE+ owners

9.2/10Picked Rating

Runs on any RYOBI 18V battery already in the shed: a cordless dual action polisher with a 125mm pad, variable speed and a rounded front handle for working round the curves of a wing, sold without a battery or charger. Three pads come with it, so a charged ONE+ battery is all it needs.

What owners say: Owners call it a top-quality tool for light bodywork and a fine finish, and like the speed control, though several find a battery runs down sooner than they’d like and one reports it stalling under pressure.

Heads up: It’s a bare tool: no battery or charger in the box. RYOBI puts a 5Ah battery at up to 50 minutes of polishing, so for a whole car have a second one charged.

A closer look: Start on a low speed with the cutting pad and compound, then come back over the panel with the finishing pad for the gloss. The same battery runs RYOBI’s drills, mowers and vacuums, which is the point of buying into the system; anyone without one is better served by one of the mains machines here.

  • Rounded front handle for curves
  • 3-year guarantee

#3Ginour 1050W Dual Action Polisher

£50–£75

8.8/10Picked Rating

A tighter 9mm orbit than the other mains machines here, which Ginour says gives finer control on curves and small repairs, with a 1,050W motor, six speeds and a brush chamber that opens without taking the casing apart.

What owners say: Owners like the generous pad set and say it lifts fine scratches to leave the paint gleaming; they differ on its weight, whether the speed control does enough, and how much it vibrates.

A closer look: Ginour pitches the small orbit at control, for curved panels, mirrors and spot repairs, rather than sheer speed across a bonnet. When the motor starts to falter after long use, the brush chamber opens in three steps and the two spare brushes are already in the box.

  • Swap motor brushes without dismantling
  • D-handle and side handle

#4Protmex Cordless Car Polisher with Two 21V Batteries

8.6/10Picked Rating

No cable to catch on a tyre or drag through the mud: a 6in eccentric polisher weighing about 1.5kg with its battery, with two 21V 2.0Ah batteries that Protmex puts at around 100 minutes together.

What owners say: Owners praise its balance in the hand and how quickly it clears light scratches, but a charge can be as short as 20 minutes for some, and a few units gave up after little use.

Heads up: Charge both batteries fully before the first job, as Protmex advises, and keep the second one charged as a backup.

A closer look: Cordless suits waxing, buffing and lighter polishing round the car, and swapping batteries takes seconds. The kit runs from flat and wave sponges to wool discs, two kinds of cover and sandpaper, so try each on a small, hidden area before starting on a whole panel.

  • About 1.5kg with battery
  • Batteries swap in seconds

8.6/10Picked Rating

A 1,100W dual action machine with a long 15mm orbit for getting round bonnets and doors quickly, in BATOCA’s 230V GB version. BATOCA says beginners can use it without the risk to the paint that comes with a rotary.

What owners say: Owners call it easy to get the hang of, and one buffed a whole van in under an hour; some find it a bit heavy to hold up for long.

Heads up: The long orbit makes it buzz more in the hand than a small-orbit machine, as BATOCA itself notes, so hold it with both hands and let the pad do the work.

A closer look: Work one small section at a time in overlapping passes, keeping the pad flat and moving, then buff off the residue before the next panel. The microfibre towel and gloves in the box cover that wipe-down, and spare carbon brushes come with it too.

Best rotary

8.4/10Picked Rating

The one rotary here: a 1,100W, 180mm machine that polishes paintwork and also sands wood, plastic and metal, with electronic speed control from 1,000 to 3,500rpm, a spindle lock for quick pad changes and a carry case.

What owners say: Owners rate its solid build, and several report impressive results on their paintwork, while others are disappointed and say it slows to a crawl under pressure.

A closer look: Einhell’s advice is to set the speed before the pad touches the surface and let the machine run up to it first. Keep it moving across the panel, since a rotary can build up heat when held in one place, and the case keeps the pads and sanding sheets together between jobs.
