Tog measures how well a duvet holds in warmth, on a scale devised at the Shirley Institute, the cotton industry’s research centre in Manchester. 10.5 tog is the all-year middle: warmer than a 4.5 tog summer duvet, lighter than a 13.5 or 15 tog winter one. A 3-in-1 is two duvets, a light one and a medium one, that popper together for winter.

Every duvet here is synthetic, so it goes in the washing machine at home, though a double or king needs a big drum. A UK double is 200 x 200cm and a king 225 x 220cm; every link here opens on a double.

What matters

  • How hot it can be washed, and whether it tumble dries.
  • Stitching that keeps the filling from bunching up.
  • A filling made to spring back into shape after washing.

#1Silentnight Deep Sleep Duvet, 10.5 tog (double)

£20–£30

Best overall

9.5/10Picked Rating

Made in the UK and generously filled with soft hollowfibre under a microfibre cover, it’s an easy all-year duvet that Silentnight says can be machine washed at 60°C, and it comes with a five-year guarantee.

What owners say: Owners like that it’s warm without feeling heavy, and say it fills a standard double cover neatly.

A closer look: Most bedrooms suit a 10.5 tog from spring to autumn, and plenty of people keep one on all year with a throw added in deep winter. Give it a shake when making the bed so the fibre stays evenly spread. A double needs a large drum to wash properly, so a launderette machine is the fallback.

  • 5-year guarantee
  • Soft microfibre cover

#2Siebenschläfer Medium All Year Round Duvet, 10.5 tog (double)

£20–£30

Best for hot washes

9.4/10Picked Rating

A light all-year duvet from the German brand Siebenschläfer, stitched all the way round so the microfibre filling stays put, and the only one here that can go through a 95°C wash.

What owners say: Owners point to the stitching that keeps the filling evenly spread, and like how light it is on warmer nights, though a few find it on the thin side.

A closer look: It’s light to lift for a 10.5 tog, which suits warm bedrooms and anyone who finds thicker duvets stuffy. A 95°C wash needs a machine with that setting and a drum with room for a double, so check both before relying on it. Let it dry right through before the cover goes back on.

  • Stitched all the way round
  • OEKO-TEX tested for harmful substances
  • Light to lift

Best for: Washing really hot

#3Slumberdown Anti Allergy Duvet, 10.5 tog (double)

£10–£20

9.1/10Picked Rating

A soft hollowfibre duvet made in the UK from recycled polyester, and the one here that Slumberdown says is tested and approved by Allergy UK. It washes at 40°C and can go in the tumble dryer.

What owners say: Owners describe it as soft and fluffy, with enough body for the colder months, though a few mention stitching that came loose.

A closer look: A cool 40°C wash and a low tumble dry with a couple of dryer balls bring the fibre back to full loft. Some people find a 10.5 tog too warm at the height of summer, and Slumberdown sells the same duvet in lighter togs for those months.

  • Allergy UK approved, says Slumberdown
  • Tumble dryer friendly
  • Soft-touch microfibre cover
  • Made in the UK

Best for: A soft duvet that tumble dries

#4Slumberdown All Seasons 3-in-1 Duvet, 4.5 + 9 tog (double)

£30–£50

Best for all seasons

9.1/10Picked Rating

Two duvets in one: a 4.5 tog for summer and a 9 tog for spring and autumn, which popper together into a 13.5 tog for winter, so one buy covers the whole year. Made in the UK, says Slumberdown, with hollowfibre under a soft-touch microfibre cover.

What owners say: Owners like being able to change it with the seasons, find the two clipped together warm enough for autumn and winter, and call it good value, though a few report stitching coming undone.

A closer look: Each layer goes in the machine on its own at 40°C, so loads are lighter and dry faster than one thick winter duvet. To join them, line up the edges and press each popper until it clicks. Warm sleepers often stay on the 9 tog well into autumn, so treat the seasons as a rough guide.

  • Poppers join the two layers
  • Each layer washes separately
  • Tumble dryer friendly
  • Made in the UK

Filled with Smartfil, the maker’s own fibre spun from recycled plastic bottles and designed to spring back into shape after a 60°C wash. The Fine Bedding Company is a family firm that started out in 1912 making bedding for ocean liners.

What owners say: Owners find it light yet warm, and say it comes out of the wash and the tumble dryer as plump as before.

A closer look: Its fibre is made to cope with frequent hot washes, which suits homes with pets on the bed or anyone who likes bedding very fresh. Tumble dry it until it’s dry right through, then shake it out to even the fill before the cover goes back on.

  • Springs back after hot washes
  • Tumble dryer safe
  • Soft-touch microfibre cover
  • Made in its Estonian factory
