A laser rangefinder gives the exact distance to the flag (or a bunker, or a tree) at the press of a button. It speeds up play and takes the guesswork out of club choice, which makes it one of the most-used presents a golfer can get.
Since the 2019 Rules of Golf, rangefinders are allowed unless a competition bans them with a Local Rule, but measuring elevation isn't. That's why slope models have a switch to turn it off for competitions.
