An ice scraper is a flat blade for clearing frost and ice off car windows. Hard plastic blades are the everyday kind, often with ridges or teeth on the back for cracking thick ice first, while a softer TPU edge clears frost and water in wide sweeps. Pocket scrapers live in the door or the glovebox; long ones add a brush for snow on the roof.

Clearing the glass properly is more than a nicety: the Highway Code says drivers must be able to see, so all snow and ice has to come off every window before setting off. A squeegee edge or a foam pad helps on wet and misty mornings too.

What matters

  • A grip that’s comfortable in cold hands.
  • A blade wide enough to clear the windscreen in fewer strokes.
  • Soft bristles on a snow brush, so it’s kind to the paintwork.

#1RevHeads Ice Scraper with Reinforced Handle

Under £10

Best overall

9.2/10Picked Rating

A sturdy hand scraper with a reinforced handle, made to lean into thick frost and chunks of ice rather than flexing like a thin forecourt scraper.

What owners say: Owners find the grip comfortable in the cold and say it clears frost without much pressure.

A closer look: Kept in the driver’s door pocket, it’s within reach before getting in. Work from the edges of the glass inwards with short, firm strokes; there’s no brush, so a heavy fall of snow is better pushed off first with a soft brush.

  • Stays stiff on thick ice
  • Weighs about 90g

Best for: Hard frost, kept in the door

#2AstroAI 2-in-1 Snow Brush and Ice Scraper (68.6cm)

Under £10

Best snow brush

9.0/10Picked Rating

A snow brush and scraper in one, 68.6cm long, with a 17.8cm brush head for pushing snow off the roof and bonnet and an 11.4cm scraper for the glass. The two halves come apart for storing.

What owners say: Owners find it sturdy, with a brush strong enough for heavy snow and the length to reach across the windscreen.

A closer look: Clear the roof first, then the windows, so snow doesn’t slide back onto clean glass. AstroAI says the split, polished bristles won’t scratch paint, so the brush is fine on the bonnet, lights and mirrors as well as the windscreen.

  • Brush safe on paintwork
  • Clears roof and bonnet

Best for: Clearing snow, then ice

#3BEEWAY Ice Scraper with 13cm TPU Blade

Under £10

Best soft blade

9.0/10Picked Rating

A wide 13cm blade, in soft TPU that BEEWAY says won’t scratch, for clearing frost and water in fewer sweeps, with a row of hard ABS ‘shark teeth’ on the back for breaking up thick ice first.

What owners say: Owners like the long handle for reaching the far side of the glass without leaning over, and say it made quick work of windscreens and lights.

A closer look: On a hard frost, run the toothed edge over the thickest patches to crack them, then follow with the flat blade to clear the glass. At 32cm it reaches further than a pocket scraper but still lies flat on the back seat or in the boot.

  • Clears frost and water
  • Weighs 135g

Best for: Wide windscreens, fewer strokes

#4Bosmere Winter Care Ice Scraper with Soft Grip (W120)

Under £10

9.0/10Picked Rating

A plain, palm-sized scraper with a flat edge for the glass and raised ridges on top for cracking thicker ice, under a soft moulded grip that stays comfortable on a cold morning.

What owners say: Owners say it does a good job on light frost, feels firm and comfortable in the hand, and is small enough to tuck away in the car.

A closer look: Keep it in the glovebox or a door pocket so it’s to hand before the engine has warmed up. On a thick overnight frost, go over the worst patches with the ridged face first, then sweep the glass clear with the flat edge; it makes a sensible spare for a second car too.

  • Palm-sized
  • Weighs 60g

Best for: A glovebox spare for the second car

#5Sakura 3-in-1 Squeegee Ice Scraper (SS5411)

Under £10

Best budget

8.6/10Picked Rating

Three tools in one small scraper: a plastic blade for ice, a rubber squeegee edge for water and a foam pad for drying or wiping the glass, so it earns its place on misty mornings as well as frosty ones.

What owners say: Owners like that it copes with frost and also clears water off windows and windscreens, and find it easy to handle.

A closer look: After rain or a thaw, the squeegee side pulls water off the side windows and mirrors, and the foam pad wipes away what’s left. Small enough to live in the glovebox, though the colour comes at random.

  • Squeegee clears side mirrors
  • Colour chosen at random

Best for: Frost, rain and misted glass
