A mini greenhouse is a set of shelves on a light steel frame under a clear cover, with a door that zips and rolls up. It keeps off wind, rain and the worst of the cold, so seeds can go in earlier in spring and young plants have somewhere sheltered to grow on. Most covers are clear PVC; Christow says its reinforced polythene is thicker and stronger than PVC.

Tall, light frames need anchoring: Christow recommends pegging its greenhouse down or fixing it to a wall, and weight on the bottom shelf helps too. For hardening off, the RHS’s way with a cold frame works with the door: open it a little by day, close it at night, and open it further as the weeks go by.

What matters

  • Shelf load ratings in kilograms, for heavy pots.
  • Space between the tiers, for taller plants.
  • A cover marked UV-resistant or UV-treated.
  • Ties that hold the cover firmly to the frame.

The cover is the difference: Christow’s is a grid sandwiched between two layers of polythene, thicker than plain PVC and UV-resistant, over a powder-coated steel frame with four mesh shelves 33cm apart.

What owners say: Owners mention clear instructions and a frame that feels sturdy once built, at a size that suits a hobby garden or patio; the complaints are covers that ripped and shelves that didn’t stay put for some.

A closer look: Christow recommends pegging it down or fixing it to a wall, so have a few garden pegs ready for an open patio. On warm days, roll the door up and tie it back with the built-in ties for air and pollinators, and lift a shelf out to make room for taller plants.

  • Door zips on both sides
  • UV-resistant cover
  • Ties hold the door open
  • Shelves lift out

Best for: A tougher cover

Tall and narrow for a patio corner or an allotment: 158cm high on a 50 × 45cm footprint, with four wire shelves that take 8kg each and a frame that slots together without tools.

What owners say: Owners had it up in about 20 minutes and find it roomier inside than it looks, with space for trays of seedlings, though several found the cover tearing within a couple of months.

A closer look: The poles push together without tools and come apart just as easily, so it can be packed away for winter or carried to the allotment. On windy plots, a paving slab or a couple of heavy pots on the bottom shelf help keep it steady.

  • Slots together without tools
  • Packs away for winter
  • Roll-up zip door

Best for: Small patios and allotments

The shortest here at 130cm, so it suits a balcony, a porch or a conservatory, and DIVCHI sells it for use indoors as well as out. The cover is clear PVC on a steel frame.

What owners say: Buyers use it to shelter plants through the winter, and one found the poles could be rearranged into a different layout; some say the cover rips easily, and it’s light enough to need weighing down.

A closer look: Indoors, it makes a tidy rack for starting seeds beside a bright window. Outside, roll the zip door up on sunny days so it doesn’t overheat, and close it again in the evening while the nights are still cold.

  • Roll-up zip door

At 105cm wide, about twice the width of the narrow growhouses, it gives four wide shelves of growing space under a UV-treated, reinforced polythene cover. It’s from Gardman’s Grow It range.

What owners say: A lot of shelf for a small garden, owners say, and the push-fit frame is simple to put up, though some found the top coming apart and the poles working loose.

A closer look: Velcro ties with buckles hold the cover to the frame, so check they’re fastened after a windy night. With shelves 105cm wide, seed trays sit side by side, and a shelf lifts out to make room for taller plants.

  • Push-fit frame, no tools
  • Buckled ties hold the cover
  • Seed trays fit side-by-side

Best for: Big batches of seed trays

#5Outsunny 4 Tier Mini Greenhouse (160cm)

£26.99 RRP

8.3/10Picked Rating

Wider than the narrow growhouses at 70cm, with four steel shelves that Outsunny rates at 15kg each and 35cm between the tiers, for bigger pots.

What owners say: Roomy for its footprint, according to owners, and one uses it for hardening off seedlings before they go out; the weak points are the zip, which broke for several, and a frame some found wobbly once loaded.

Heads up: Outsunny notes it isn’t made for bad weather, so on an exposed plot weigh it down and move it somewhere sheltered when strong winds are forecast.

A closer look: With 35cm between the tiers there’s room for trays of seedlings and medium pots, and pots of damp compost are fine on shelves that each take 15kg. Zip the door slowly and keep the teeth clear of soil, which keeps it running smoothly.

  • Roll-up zip door
  • Room for medium pots

Best for: Heavier pots
