Most phone tripods now are a selfie stick with three short legs folded into the handle: pull the pole out and it’s a stick, open the legs and it stands on its own, with a small Bluetooth remote to take the picture from across the room. The idea is older than camera phones: two Minolta engineers, Hiroshi Ueda and Yujiro Mima, patented a telescopic extender for compact cameras in the 1980s.

The tallest reach above head height, for filming from above; with the pole pushed in, they stand on a table for video calls. Some add a cold shoe on the clamp for a clip-on light or microphone, or a standard tripod screw so a small camera can go on instead of the phone.

What matters

  • Folded length and weight, if it’s going in a bag.
  • A clamp wide enough for the phone in its case.
  • Sturdy section locks, so the pole doesn’t slip down.

Light at 340g, with a pole that reaches 180cm and a 1/4in adapter in the box for an action camera or a small compact. The clamp takes phones 2.2 to 3.7 inches wide, with a cold shoe on top for a light or mic.

What owners say: Owners like how instantly the remote pairs with a phone, and say it packs small enough to go travelling.

A closer look: Swap the phone clamp for the adapter in the box and it takes anything with a standard tripod thread, from an action camera to a small compact. Open the legs for a stand on a table, wall or bench, or leave them shut and it works as a plain selfie stick on a walk.

  • Adapter fits action cameras
  • Mounts a light or mic
  • Fits phones 2.2–3.7in wide
  • Doubles as a selfie stick

Best for: Travel, with a camera too

A stick tripod built round a nylon shell rather than bare plastic, with a cold shoe on top of the phone clamp for a clip-on light or microphone. It stands 157cm tall, a little shorter than the rest, and closes to about 30cm.

What owners say: Owners find it sturdy and quick to set up, and use it for everyday photos and videos as much as group shots.

A closer look: Pair the remote with the phone’s Bluetooth once and it works as a shutter button from up to 10 metres away. The clamp clicks between landscape, portrait and an angle halfway between, so one tripod covers group photos, upright videos for social apps and a tilted shot of a desk.

  • Nylon shell, not bare plastic
  • Mounts a light or mic
  • Clamp clicks to three positions
  • 10m remote range

Best for: Upright videos and group shots

Its clamp opens wider than the others, taking phones from 6.5 to 10cm across, so a big phone in a thick case still fits. The eight-section pole runs from 33cm to 180cm, and the remote tucks into a groove in the tripod when it isn’t needed.

What owners say: Owners take it away on holidays and to events and say it’s simple to use.

A closer look: Flipping the arm that holds the phone through its 255° helps with low angles and with shots looking down on a table. Slot the remote back into its groove after use, so it travels with the tripod rather than loose in a bag.

  • Fits phones 6.5–10cm wide
  • Remote stores in a groove
  • Arm flips through 255°
  • Eight-section pole

#4YOTOCversion 1.7m Aluminium Phone Tripod and Selfie Stick

Aluminium legs and a pole that reaches 1.7m, with quick flip locks to hold each section where you set it. The holder opens to 9.5cm, wide enough for most phones in a case.

What owners say: Owners find it simple to set up and adjust, and use the remote for photos and video alike, though a few had parts give way early on.

A closer look: The holder turns right round and takes the phone upright or sideways, so going from a group photo to an upright video for social apps is a twist of the head. Folded, it’s 47cm long, so it rides better in a car boot or suitcase than in a day bag.

  • Holder opens to 9.5cm
  • Holder turns right round

The lightest here at 264g, folding to 31cm, so it slips into a backpack or carry-on and still stands 180cm tall. The aluminium pole has seven sections and the clamp takes phones 2.6 to 3.6 inches wide.

What owners say: Owners say the holder grips even a bulky Galaxy S25 Ultra securely, and use it for selfies, group shots and video.

Heads up: Like any light tripod it’s steadiest on a flat surface, so on grass or gravel keep it a section or two below full height.

A closer look: The remote works with phones only: a camera on the tripod screw needs its own timer or app to take the picture. The holder turns through 360°, so switching between portrait and landscape doesn’t mean taking the phone out of the clamp.

  • Seven-section aluminium pole
  • Fits phones 2.6–3.6in wide
  • 360° phone holder
  • Remote is for phones only
