A running belt does the job a pocket can’t, holding things snug at the waist so they stay put mid-stride. Pouch belts carry zipped pockets on an adjustable strap, so one size fits most waists; a tube belt pulls on over the hips and holds everything in a loop of stretchy fabric, with nothing to buckle or zip.

Tubes and stretch belts come in sizes, chosen by measuring where the belt will sit. Most makers give the biggest phone their pocket takes, and a case adds bulk. For long runs, a trail belt may carry a soft flask, but none of these makers lists race-number clips, so a number still goes on with pins.

What matters

  • A water-resistant finish, for rain and sweat.
  • Reflective trim, for running in the dark.
  • Machine-washable fabric, for after sweaty runs.

#1Eono Water Resistant Running Belt

£10–£20

Best overall

9.0/10Picked Rating

Two zipped pockets on a stretchy strap that adjusts to fit most waists, with a water-resistant finish on the fabric and zips: room for a phone up to 6.5 inches, keys, cards and earbuds on a damp morning run.

What owners say: Owners find it doesn’t rub or bounce, and get a large phone, earbuds, keys and a card wallet into the two pockets.

A closer look: Wear the pouch at the front for quick access to the phone, or turn it to the small of the back on longer runs, where it moves least. Water-resistant isn’t waterproof, so on a really wet day a small freezer bag round the phone adds a second layer.

  • Adjustable elastic strap
  • Holds keys, cards and earbuds

Best for: Phone, keys and cards on a strap

#2Waterfly Running Belt Bum Bag (ONJ22)

£10–£20

Best bum bag

8.8/10Picked Rating

A 100g Lycra bum bag on a buckled strap, with three zipped compartments that keep the phone away from keys, a port for a headphone cable and a reflective logo. Waterfly says the main pocket fits most standard phones, such as an iPhone 15 Pro.

What owners say: Owners rate the quality and comfort and like the space for gels and keys alongside the phone, though some find it too small for their phone and others say it bounces.

Heads up: It’s happiest with a standard-size phone: Waterfly’s own guide is an iPhone 15 Pro, so check a bigger phone in its case against that first.

A closer look: Gels go in the middle compartment and keys in the small one, which keeps them off the phone screen. Clip the buckle at the front, pull the strap snug, then turn the pouch to wherever it sits most comfortably. The fabric is hand wash only.

  • Headphone port
  • Reflective logo
  • Weighs 100g
  • Hand wash only

#3Salomon Pulse Belt

Best for trail runs

8.8/10Picked Rating

A minimal 62g stretch belt with a zipped pocket, stretch pockets that take a 500ml soft flask and elastic straps for a light jacket or poles, which makes it a belt for long runs off-road. Salomon began in 1947 in Annecy, in the French Alps, as a family workshop making ski edges.

What owners say: Owners say it fits snugly, carries everything a long or trail run needs and stays still even when it’s loaded, and the zipped front pocket gets a mention too.

A closer look: Size S is what the link opens on, one of five sizes, so check Salomon’s chart against a waist measurement before ordering, and go a size up if it’s worn on the hips. Soft flasks ride best at the back, with keys and a card in the zipped pocket, and Salomon says to hand wash it cold.

  • Weighs 62g
  • Straps for poles or jacket
  • Reflective details
  • Hand wash cold

A slim nylon and elastane band with a main pocket for the phone and a smaller one for keys, cards and cash, a sweat- and splash-resistant finish, and reflective strips for dark mornings.

What owners say: Owners call it a brilliant belt and say it holds a phone and an earbud case comfortably without bouncing, though the zips get mixed reports.

A closer look: It shrugs off sweat and a shower but isn’t one for swimming: PORTENTUM says not to submerge it. Check its size guide before ordering, and spot-clean it rather than putting it through the wash, since the care label says spot clean only.

  • Reflective strips
  • Weighs 80g
  • Spot clean only
  • Adjustable elastic strap

A pull-on tube with four openings round the band: phone, keys (on the internal hook), cards and gels go in, then the belt is turned so the openings face the body and nothing can drop out. With no buckle or zip, there’s nothing to dig in or rub.

What owners say: Owners say it stays put without slipping and is barely noticeable once running, with room for a phone, keys and small bits, though sizing catches some out and opinions split on the price and how long it lasts.

Heads up: Measure before choosing a size: FlipBelt says to go true to size on the hips, a size up if it’s worn low and a size down at the natural waist.

A closer look: The link opens without a size picked, so choose one on the page from a waist or hip measurement. Slide the phone round to the side or back, where the band holds it flattest, and clip keys to the hook inside. FlipBelt says it can be machine washed and then hung to dry.

  • No buckle or zip
  • Turns so nothing drops out

Three zipped pockets, room for a phone up to 6.9 inches, and reflective strips on the pockets and the back of the band for runs after dark.

What owners say: Owners find room for a wallet, phone, keys and gels, and one says it held up well on rainy runs, though some say it rides up and several had a zip break.

A closer look: Keep the main pocket for the phone and the two small ones for keys and a card, so nothing scratches the screen. The zips last longer when the pockets close without strain, so a slim card case beats a bulky wallet. There’s a hole for a wired headphone cable, and the belt can go in the washing machine.
