Lift dandelions and thistles out of the lawn, root and all, without kneeling: five stand-up weed pullers compared on length, claws and how the weed comes off.
A stand-up weed puller does a trowel’s job from standing height. Centre the claws over the weed, step on the pedal to drive them into the soil round the root, then lean the handle back: the claws close on the taproot and lift it out with a small plug of soil. They’re at their best on lawn weeds with one deep root, such as dandelions, thistles and plantain.
Getting the whole root matters, because the RHS says dandelions can regrow from pieces of root left in the soil. Most of the makers suggest weeding after rain or a watering, when the ground is soft and the claws go in easily. The Fiskars and Digtokore push the weed off the claws for you; with the others it comes off by hand.

Grampa’s Weeder Original Stand-Up Weed Puller

The original four-claw stand-up weeder on a 45in bamboo handle: centre it over a dandelion, step on the footpad and lean back, and the claws pinch the root. First made in Seattle in 1913, it was revived in 1999 by an Oregon family who found one in a garage.
What owners say: Owners say it copes with well-established weeds and like not having to bend down to clear the lawn.
A closer look: There’s no ejector, so the weed comes off the claws by hand or with a knock against the side of a bucket. Grampa’s says it works in all soils and best after rain or a watering; hard clay and stony ground are tougher going, so water a dry lawn the evening before.

A bamboo handle and four claws, like the Grampa’s, for less money, with a non-slip pedal and a powder-coated head against rust. The 1.1m handle comes in three pieces that twist together, so it packs down small.
What owners say: Owners say it’s sturdy and deals with big dandelions and thistles well.
A closer look: Twist the three sections together firmly before each session so the handle doesn’t work loose, and hang it up by the hole in the handle afterwards. Ormalla suggests weeding after rain or a watering, when the claws go in easily and bring up more of the root.

Fiskars SmartFit Telescopic Weed Puller (1020125)

The shaft telescopes from 99 to 119cm to suit the user’s height, and a push on the handle opens the four stainless claws to drop the weed straight into a bucket or wheelbarrow. Fiskars says it grips roots up to 10cm down.
What owners say: Owners say it pulls out tap roots cleanly and weighs very little.
A closer look: Fiskars pitches it at dandelions, thistles and nettles in loose soil, with roots up to 4cm across. Afterwards the claws rinse clean under the tap, and the shaft slides down short to go back in the shed.

Digtokore Stand-Up Weed Puller with 4 Claws (SP00301)

A push handle slides the weed off the four 8cm stainless claws, so the roots go into the bucket without being touched, and the fibreglass-reinforced pedal folds away for storage.
What owners say: Owners say it gets long roots out whole and goes together easily from the instructions.
A closer look: It arrives in parts: the handle, push rod and pedal fit together, and the two small black rubber plugs are tucked inside two of the parts rather than packed separately. Digtokore recommends using it on damp ground after rain or watering, not on dry, hard soil.

What owners say: Owners find the three prongs slide into the ground easily and say it’s especially good on dandelions.
Heads up: It lifts a wider plug of soil than most, so keep some topsoil and grass seed handy to fill the holes.
A closer look: The offset grip keeps knuckles clear of the ground as the handle goes back, and at 39in it suits most people working upright. It’s steel throughout, so a wipe and a dry corner of the shed keep it in good order.
