Air-dry clay is shaped like a potter’s clay, in coils, slabs or pinch pots, and hardens as it dries, with no kiln. Natural air-dry clay, the kind on this list, is real clay in white or a pale stone gray. The soft, ready-colored modeling kits sold for young children are a different thing, so they aren’t here.

Drying time depends on thickness, so a thin dish is ready long before a chunky figure, and a piece should be dry right through before it’s painted. A coat of varnish or shellac over the paint protects it and helps keep water out. AMACO’s big box can also be fired in a kiln, for a harder piece that takes a glaze.

What matters

  • A block for small pieces, or a big tub for a whole class.
  • A tub or bag that reseals, so leftovers stay soft.
  • The color it dries to, for pieces you won’t paint.
  • Tools, paints and varnish in the box, or just the clay.

Five pounds of natural white clay in a tub that seals again, enough for a classroom or plenty of family projects. It takes the classic pottery techniques of coils, slabs, pinch pots and score-and-weld, softens with a splash of water and is made to be painted once it’s dry.

What owners say: Small children can shape it without a struggle, and teachers like it for whole-class crafts and all sorts of projects. Drying times vary a lot, though: some pieces set quickly, others take a good while.

Heads up: Chunky pieces take far longer to dry than thin ones, so let a model dry right through before painting it.

A closer look: Join two pieces by scratching both surfaces, adding a dab of water and pressing them together, and smooth the seam with a wet fingertip. Between sessions, press the lid down firmly or wrap leftovers in plastic, and the clay stays workable for the next project.

  • For coils, slabs, pinch pots
  • Softens with water
  • Paint it once dry
  • Soap-and-water clean-up
  • Nontoxic

Everything two people need to make and finish pots at the kitchen table: 4.4 lb of Sculpd’s soft clay, which dries a smooth stone gray, five sculpting tools, eight tubes of acrylic paint, a waterproof gloss varnish, brushes, a sponge and a step-by-step guide with video tutorials.

What owners say: Owners enjoy it as a project to share with friends or family, find the instructions simple to follow and say there’s plenty of clay. Opinions on the price are split, and a few had paint dry out.

A closer look: A pinch pot is the easiest first piece: roll a ball, press a thumb into the middle and pinch the walls out evenly as you turn it. Let it dry right through before painting, then seal it with the varnish, and for a planter, sit a plastic pot inside rather than planting straight into the clay.

  • Dries smooth
  • Video tutorials
  • Potter’s sponge included
  • Made for two people

A smooth, even white clay that hardens in the air with no oven, fine enough for figures, trinket dishes, decorations and jewelry. It’s made in Italy, and DAS takes its name from its inventor, the Italian poet and artist Dario Sala.

What owners say: Owners find it very easy to work and a favorite for trinket dishes and small craft projects; it dries fairly quickly and pieces stick together well. Views on the texture differ, and some pieces cracked as they dried.

A closer look: Work on a smooth board or a sheet of parchment paper and keep a damp sponge close by to smooth fingerprints and hairline cracks as you go. Once a piece is hard it takes acrylic paint and varnish, and leftover clay wrapped tightly in plastic stays soft for next time.

Twenty-five pounds of all-purpose clay in one box, five times the Crayola tub, for a studio, an art room or a sculptor with a big piece in mind. It hand-models, sculpts and even throws on a wheel, and anyone with a kiln can fire it to cone 04 for a harder piece that takes a glaze.

What owners say: Plenty of clay at a fair price, owners say, and it stays moist in the box and shapes without a fight; some pieces dried brittle, and the color comes out more gray than white.

A closer look: Cut off what a session needs with a wire or an old knife and keep the rest wrapped tight in plastic, since a box this size will last through many projects. Dry finished pieces slowly and turn them now and then so every side dries evenly, and a coat of shellac over the paint strengthens them and keeps water out.

  • Kiln-fires for a harder piece
  • Works on a potter’s wheel
  • Shellac coat keeps water out
  • Dry slowly, turning often
  • For all ages
