The top 5 at a glance
An Echo is Amazon’s smart speaker. Ask Alexa and it answers questions, sets timers and alarms, plays music and controls lights, locks and thermostats that work with Alexa. Amazon unveiled the first one in November 2014. A speaker-only Echo is the simple way in; one with a screen adds something to look at, from a clock face to video calls.
For a child’s room, the Echo Pop Kids filters explicit lyrics and lets parents see what’s playing in the Parent Dashboard app. Zigbee bulbs and sensors need a hub: the Echo Dot Max and Echo Show 15 have one built in, along with Matter and Thread, while the others need a separate one.
What matters
- A bigger woofer and separate tweeter, for music as well as talk.
- A mic off button, and a shutter if there’s a camera.
- A screen that dims at night, for the nightstand.

#1Amazon Echo Dot (5th generation, Charcoal)
$75–$100
A palm-sized Alexa speaker for a nightstand or a kitchen shelf, with sound clear enough for podcasts and background music and Alexa ready for timers, weather and smart home control. On an eero network it also acts as a mesh Wi-Fi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq ft of coverage.
What owners say: Owners call it a fantastic little speaker, with sound well beyond its size and a setup that takes minutes. Reliability splits them: some find it dependable, while others say it isn’t.
A closer look: Once the routines are set in the Alexa app, the motion sensor can switch on a lamp as you walk in and the temperature sensor can start a fan when the room warms up. A mic off button stops it listening whenever you’d rather it didn’t.
- Motion and temperature sensors
- Tap the top to snooze
- Extends an eero mesh network
- Mic off button

#2Amazon Echo Pop Kids (Disney Princess)
$30–$50
A kids’ Echo with fewer worries for parents: songs asked for from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify or Pandora are filtered for explicit lyrics, and the Parent Dashboard app shows what’s being listened to. If it breaks, Amazon replaces it free under its two-year worry-free guarantee.
What owners say: Parents call it a great addition to a child’s room, with good sound and parental controls that come with safety settings already in place, and they feel they paid a fair price. It doesn’t always behave: some say it runs and connects without trouble, while others report it not working properly or losing its connection.
Heads up: The listing promises new Alexa+ features for kids, but its spec table still marks Alexa+ as coming soon for this model, so check before you buy if the newer Alexa matters to you.
A closer look: Set up the Parent Dashboard before it goes in the bedroom, so the bedtime playlist and wind-down reminders are ready on the first night. A morning alarm and a simple daily routine give younger children a small job of their own. The same speaker also comes in a Marvel’s Avengers design.

#3Amazon Echo Spot (2024, Black)
$100–$150
Built to replace the bedside alarm clock: the half-round screen shows the time, the weather and the song that’s playing, and you choose the clock face and colors. An Alexa routine can wake you with music and gradual light, and it has no camera, so nothing points at the bed.
What owners say: Owners like the sound and the look, had it running in minutes and rate the sharp screen, which dims at night, though some still find it too bright to sleep by. Opinions split on how well it works as an alarm clock and on its time display, and a number find it buggy or say it stops playing.
A closer look: Its 1.73-inch speaker is tuned for clear vocals and some bass, enough for a podcast or the radio while you get dressed. Motion detection can start a routine as you pass, such as turning down the thermostat on your way out. Besides black, it sells in Glacier White and Ocean Blue.
- Custom clock faces and colors
- Wakes you with music, light
- Motion starts routines
- Extends an eero mesh network
Best for: Nightstands and desks

- 2.83" touch, 240 x 320

#4Amazon Echo Show 15 (2nd generation, 2024)
Over $300
A family bulletin board for the kitchen wall: shared calendars, to-do lists, the weather and smart home controls sit on one 15.6-inch screen, and with Fire TV built in it plays Prime Video, Netflix or YouTube while you cook. It’s also the only display here with a full Zigbee, Matter and Thread hub.
Heads up: It comes with a wall mount and screws, and fitting it needs a drill; a table stand is sold separately if you’d rather keep it on the counter.
A closer look: Decide where it goes before drilling: it works in landscape or portrait, and the 5-foot cord needs an outlet close by. Start a song in the kitchen and you can add other Echo devices in the living room or bedroom on the fly. Between uses, the screen can run a slideshow of family photos.
- Landscape or portrait mounting
- Voice remote included
- Calendar, list and photo widgets
- Wall mount and screws included
- Wi-Fi 6E
Best for: Busy family kitchens

#5Amazon Echo Dot Max (2025)
$75–$100
The step up for listening: a 2.5-inch woofer and a separate tweeter give it, by Amazon’s figures, nearly three times the bass of the 2022 Echo Dot, and it tunes its sound to the room it’s in. It also has the smart home hub the regular Dot lacks, so Zigbee, Matter and Thread devices connect without a separate hub.
What owners say: Owners describe the sound as crystal clear and like the compact design. Reliability, connection and price divide them, and so does how well it hears commands: some love Alexa’s more natural voice, others find it slow to respond, and they disagree on whether it’s a real step up from the Echo Dot.
A closer look: Give it a place in the living room or another mid-sized space, where the larger woofer has room to work. Add a second Dot Max later for richer sound, or group it with other Echo speakers to play in several rooms at once. Tap gestures and presence detection can start routines too.
- Tunes sound to the room
- Pairs with another Dot Max
- Tap gestures start routines
- Presence and light sensors
- Extends an eero mesh network
Best for: Living-room music with more bass
- Screen

- Speaker
- 2.5" woofer, 0.8" tweeter
- Smart home hub
