A cocktail smoker is a small chimney that sits on top of the glass. Light a few wood chips in its basket; the smoke drifts down and gathers under the lid, and after a few seconds you lift it off to a drink that smells of oak, cherry or hickory. Most kits light the chips with a refillable butane torch, while an electric smoker does it at the press of a button.

Smoke suits whiskey and bourbon above all, but works on most cocktails and on cheese too. Only Aged & Charred’s kit comes with butane, so buy a can with any other torch kit. The torch is an open flame: light it away from your face, and let the top cool before putting it away.

What matters

  • A wide top or a glass rest, to fit more glass sizes.
  • A mesh filter or guard that keeps the flame off the wood.
  • A spread of chip flavors, to find the smoke you like.
  • A spare screen and a brush for clearing out the ash.

#1G&J’s Finest Mahogany Whiskey Smoker Kit with Quad-Flame Torch

$50–$75

Best overall

9.6/10Picked Rating

Six flavors of wood and three ways of smoking let you give a drink anything from a light touch of smoke to a heavy hit. The genuine mahogany top has smoke vents, a scorch shield and an oversized glass rest that fits a range of glass sizes, and a four-flame torch lights the chips quickly.

What owners say: Owners say it suits bourbon and whiskey drinkers, with clear directions and a good mix of wood chips. They find it built to last, with enough chips for years of drinks.

A closer look: Begin with the gentlest of the three methods and a small pinch of chips, then work up to a bolder infusion once you know how much smoke you like. Brush the mesh filters clean after they cool, and keep the torch, chips and top together in the velvet box between sessions.

  • Three ways to smoke drinks
  • Scorch shield and smoke vents
  • 2 steel mesh filters
  • Velvet-lined gift box
  • Recipe book included

Best for: Bourbon drinkers who like to experiment

#2Aged & Charred Premium Whiskey Smoker Kit with Torch, Butane and Old Fashioned Syrup

9.4/10Picked Rating

The one torch kit here that’s ready to go out of the box: it comes with a 2.5 fl oz can of butane for its four-burner culinary torch, a tapered lid of American oak that fits rocks, Glencairn and coupe glasses, eight chip flavors and 2 oz of old fashioned syrup, all in a wooden box.

What owners say: Owners enjoy the flavors and the spread of wood chips, say everything needed is in the box, and admire the look of it. The price divides them.

A closer look: With butane in the box, the first smoked drink can happen the day it arrives: fill the torch from the can, stir the syrup into whiskey over ice, sit the oak lid on the glass and light a pinch of chips. The spare screen and brush keep the lid clean, and the wooden box holds every piece between drinks.

  • Fits rocks, Glencairn, coupe glasses
  • 2 oz old fashioned syrup
  • Spare screen and brush
  • Wooden gift box

Best for: Old fashioneds from day one

#3ComboJoy Whiskey Smoker Kit with Torch, 2 Glasses and 2 Ice Ball Molds

Best with glasses

9.1/10Picked Rating

Everything for two smoked drinks in one box: an oak smoker top with a steel mesh filter, a refillable torch, six wood chip flavors, two whiskey glasses and two molds for large round ice balls, so nothing else needs buying except the butane and the bottle.

What owners say: Owners like that it looks just as pictured and say the different wood chips add plenty of flavor; the ice ball molds work well, and they’re pleased with the price. The complaints: some lighters stop working after a few uses, and the torch arrives without butane.

Heads up: Fill the torch with butane before the first use; if it still won’t light, turn the black button on its base toward + or − until it catches.

A closer look: Freeze the ice balls the night before, since big spheres take hours to set. Pour the drink over one, sit the oak top on the glass, add a pinch of chips to the mesh and give it a short burst of flame; a light smoke is plenty for a first try, and the chips can go on meat or cheese too.

  • Steel mesh in the top
  • Adjustable torch flame
  • Chips also smoke meat, cheese
  • Comes in a gift box

Best for: Smoked drinks for two

#4Smokpub Electric Whiskey Smoker Kit

No torch and no butane: the chips are lit electrically at the press of a button, and the magnetic cover puts the flame out as soon as it’s lifted. Smokpub began as a Kickstarter campaign in 2024 and comes with six chip flavors and a USB charging cable.

What owners say: Owners say it takes no learning and that the thick smoke stays in the glass, with finely cut chips in several flavors and a battery that lasts. Several, though, say theirs stopped working after a couple of months of light use.

A closer look: Sit it on the glass, hold the button for three seconds until the green light flashes, then press again to start the smoke. Small and with no open flame, it packs easily for a party, a picnic or a trip, and the metal brush in the box clears the ash out after each session.

  • 130 ignitions max per charge
  • Magnetic cover puts out flame
  • Packs easily for trips
  • Metal cleaning brush included

#5JIDI Whiskey Smoker Kit with Torch and 4 Wood Chip Flavors

$20–$30

Best budget

9.0/10Picked Rating

Plain and simple: an unpainted solid-wood smoker with a metal guard and filter to protect the base, a refillable torch and four chip flavors (apple, peach, cherry and hickory), for trying smoked drinks at home.

What owners say: Owners say it’s easy to set up, gives a good smoke and adds flavor to cocktails, old fashioneds above all, and they like its look. Some received a faulty torch, and the campfire smell splits opinion.

A closer look: At about 3.4 inches across, the smoker sits on most rocks glasses and wine glasses, though a wider glass needs a bigger top. Peach is the less usual flavor in the box, and the same smoker works on cheese, coffee or even a scoop of ice cream.

  • Metal guard and filter screen
  • Smoker about 3.4 in across
  • Fits most wine glasses
  • Apple, peach, cherry, hickory chips

Best for: A first try at smoking cocktails
