Edwin Budding patented the first lawn mower in 1830; a cordless one does the same job on a rechargeable battery instead of a gas engine. A blade under the deck cuts a strip with each pass, and the clippings are mulched back into the lawn or caught in a bag. Push mowers need a shove; self-propelled ones drive themselves along, taking the effort out of slopes and big lawns.

Makers quote run times on easy grass, and thick or wet grass drains the battery faster, so on a bigger lawn a second battery is worth having. The batteries mostly run the same maker’s trimmers and blowers too, and most of the mowers fold to stand upright or lie flat in the garage.

What matters

  • Deck width to suit the lawn: wider means fewer passes.
  • A good spread of cutting heights, up to about 4 in.
  • Run time against your lawn, and how many batteries come in the box.

A 21-inch push mower on EGO’s 56V battery, with a brushless motor, seven cutting heights from 1.25 to 4 inches set with one hand, and LED headlights for a mow at dusk. It mulches, bags or side-discharges, and folds flat to take up little room in the garage.

What owners say: Owners say it’s easy to push, very quiet and leaves a clean, even cut, and they’re happy with what they paid; one mows a half-acre lawn on a single charge.

A closer look: Press the button and it starts, with no pull cord or choke. On a bigger yard a second 56V battery is worth adding, since one charge won’t always finish the job, and the same batteries run EGO’s trimmers and blowers. Set the handle height to suit you before the first mow.

  • Push-button start, no pull cord
  • LED headlights
  • Folds flat for storage
  • Battery fits EGO trimmers, blowers
  • Also bags or side-discharges

Rest a palm on the Touch Drive handle and it pulls itself along at 0.9 to 3.1 mph, set on a dial at your fingertips. Two 6.0Ah batteries give up to 100 minutes, and three swappable lower blades cover mulching, high-lift bagging and longer run time.

What owners say: Owners say it outperforms the gas mower it replaced, with batteries that last through a big yard, a quiet motor and a self-propel drive with real pull. The finish divides them: clean for most, uneven for a few.

A closer look: Fit the high-lift blade when you’re bagging and the mulching blade when the clippings stay on the lawn, and keep the extended-runtime blade for a short, regular trim. Turn the speed dial right down on slopes and around flower beds, and up on open stretches.

  • Touch handle drives it forward
  • Speed dial, 0.9–3.1 mph
  • Swappable mulching and bagging blades
  • Two-bushel bag
  • LED lights

Two 20V PowerShare batteries team up to make 40V, and they also fit WORX’s other PowerShare tools. IntelliCut turns the blade speed up in thick grass and down in thin patches to save charge, and the vented deck helps stop wet clippings clumping.

What owners say: Owners find it light, quick to put together and pleasant to steer, and easier going than their old gas mower; one says it gets through grass 4 to 5 inches tall. Battery life is the split, with some getting more than 20 minutes and others less.

Heads up: It runs on both batteries at once, so charge the pair together on the dual charger before each mow.

A closer look: The handle collapses all the way, so the mower can be stored upright against a wall, and a gauge on board shows how much charge is left. WORX rates the two batteries for yards up to half an acre.

  • Batteries fit WORX PowerShare tools
  • Blade speed adjusts to grass
  • Vented deck limits clumping
  • Stores upright against a wall
  • Onboard charge gauge

Rear-wheel drive pulls it up slopes and through thick grass at a pace you set, and its two 4.0Ah batteries switch over by themselves, giving up to an hour of mowing that Greenworks rates for up to three-quarters of an acre.

What owners say: It’s quiet and gets through long grass with ease, owners say, and many love the self-propel. Battery life splits them, lasting past an hour for some and falling short for others, and so does the price.

A closer look: The dual charger fills both batteries in about 80 minutes, and the handles fold so it can stand upright in the garage. At 65 lb it’s heavy to drag backward, so turn it at the end of each row rather than pulling it back.

  • Batteries switch over automatically
  • Leaf pickup mode
  • Rated up to 3/4 acre
  • Folds to stand upright
  • 4-year warranty

A 16-inch mower for small lawns, with a hardened plastic deck that keeps it to about 38 lb, so it’s easy to steer around beds and carry up a step. It mulches or bags, sets five heights on one lever, and its 40V battery also runs Greenworks’ trimmers and blowers.

What owners say: Light enough to push with one arm and remarkably quiet, owners say, and on a small lawn it’s as easy as running a vacuum over the grass. Opinions differ on battery life and power: some mow for a long time on a charge, others find it runs out or bogs down.

Heads up: Greenworks quotes up to 40 minutes from the battery and two hours to recharge it, so on a lawn near a third of an acre, keep the grass short between mows or have a second 40V battery ready.

A closer look: It suits a small front or back lawn; a bigger yard is better served by the 21-inch mowers here. Mow a notch higher in thick spring grass to spare the battery, and fold the handles down to stand it in a corner of the shed or garage.

  • Weighs about 38 lb
  • Hardened plastic deck
  • Battery fits Greenworks trimmers, blowers
  • Push-button start
  • Handles fold for storage
