An egg cooker steams eggs over a measured splash of water on a hot plate. The amount of water sets how long they cook, and so how firm the yolks come out, and when it has boiled away the cooker switches off and sounds an alert. Every one here also poaches eggs and makes an omelet on extra trays, and some double as a steamer for a handful of vegetables.

Every cooker here comes with a measuring cup for the water and a pin for pricking the rounded end of an egg, which lets the air out so the shell is less likely to crack. Two-tier cookers stack a second rack for bigger batches; single-tier ones suit a household that cooks a few at a time.

What matters

  • A buzzer or chime that’s easy to hear.
  • Trays and a lid that go in the dishwasher.
  • A cup with clear lines for soft, medium and hard.
  • Trays and cup that store inside, under the lid.

Two tiers of egg racks boil up to 12 eggs at once, and the trays poach up to seven or make an omelet. A thermal sensor buzzes and shuts off the hot plate when the water is gone, and every tray and the measuring cup store inside it.

What owners say: Eggs come out hard-boiled just right and peel easily, owners find, and a full dozen is ready in a few minutes. Poached eggs get good marks as well, and the base wipes clean with a soapy sponge.

A closer look: Measure the water to the cup’s line for the yolk you want and stack both racks for a full dozen. The lid, trays and cup go in the dishwasher, and the trays steam dumplings or green beans when there are no eggs to cook.

  • Poaches up to 7 eggs
  • Accessories store inside
  • Steams dumplings and green beans
  • Dishwasher-safe trays and lid
  • Shuts off when water’s gone

Small enough for a dorm room or a narrow counter: seven eggs on the boiling tray, two on the poaching tray, or an omelet for one in the bowl. The thermal sensor turns it off and plays a chime when the water is gone, and all the trays nest under the locking lid for storage.

What owners say: Hard-boiled eggs come out right on hardly any water, owners say, and they peel like butter. It tucks into a cabinet easily, though a few had theirs give up after some months while others find it holds up well.

A closer look: Fill the cup to the soft, medium or hard line, prick each egg with the pin on the cup and set them on the tray. When the chime sounds, a few minutes in cold water stops the cooking and makes the shells easier to peel, and at about a pound it’s easy to lift down from a shelf.

  • Trays nest under locking lid
  • Poaches 2 eggs
  • Cup has an egg-piercing pin
  • Shuts off when water’s gone

A seven-egg cooker with a two-egg poaching tray and an omelet tray, and a buzzer and light when it switches off. Every removable part goes in the dishwasher, and the manual has 16 recipes to try once the basics are down.

What owners say: Quicker than boiling water on the stove and the easiest way to cook eggs, owners say, with shells that slip off. Not everyone agrees on timing, as some found eggs undercooked, or on the buzzer, which can be shrill.

A closer look: If the first batch comes out softer than you like, add water up to the next line on the cup next time. The poaching tray takes two eggs, so for a bigger brunch, poach in rounds while the toast is going.

  • 16 recipes in the manual
  • Dishwasher-safe removable parts
  • Clear lid
  • 2-year limited warranty

Six eggs at a time, with two poaching trays and an omelet tray for the rest of breakfast. A buzzer sounds when they’re ready and the heat switches itself off, and the 18-recipe manual goes well beyond boiled eggs.

What owners say: Hard-boiled eggs peel easily and need very little water, and owners like the retro styling and how simply it cleans up. Whether the buzzer is loud enough to hear from the next room divides them.

A closer look: Stay in earshot the first few times until you know how loud the buzzer sounds in your kitchen. Through the clear lid you can watch poached eggs set, and the lid, egg tray and heating tray all come off for washing.

  • Clear lid shows eggs setting

A two-tier cooker with a brushed stainless steel lid that boils up to 10 eggs, poaches four at a time or makes a three-egg omelet, on a 600-watt heater. Cuisinart backs it with a three-year warranty.

What owners say: Hard-boiled eggs turn out the same every time in under 10 minutes, owners report, and both the peeling and the cleanup are easy. Opinions split on the price, and a few had eggs crack open inside.

Heads up: Prick the rounded end of every egg with the pin in the measuring cup before cooking: it lets the air out so shells are less likely to crack.

A closer look: A blue light, an alert and a standby mode guard against overcooking if you step away when the eggs are done. The four-egg poaching tray makes eggs Benedict for two in one go, and the cord tucks into the base when it goes back in the cabinet.

  • Brushed stainless steel lid
  • Cord tucks into the base
  • Standby mode after cooking
  • Three-year warranty
  • 600-watt heater
