The top 5 at a glance
An immersion blender is a motor in a handle with a guarded blade on the end of a shaft: it goes into the pot, bowl or beaker, so nothing has to be poured into a blender jar. Plain sticks just blend; sets add a whisk and a chopper bowl for onions, nuts and herbs. The first was Swiss: Roger Perrinjaquet filed the patent in 1950 and called it bamix, from the French ‘battre et mixer’ (beat and mix).
Speed control comes three ways: two speeds plus a turbo button, a range of many set speeds, or a button or trigger that runs faster the harder it’s pressed. Every blending shaft here is stainless steel, and the motor body only needs a wipe.
What matters
- A bell-shaped or semi-enclosed guard that keeps splashes in the pot.
- A pan guard, if you blend in nonstick pots.
- A long shaft, for deep stockpots.
- A shaft and attachments that can go in the dishwasher.

#1Braun MultiQuick 5 Hand Blender with Beaker and Whisk (MQ505)
$30–$50
Braun’s bell-shaped blade guard draws food in toward the blades and keeps splashes inside it, so soup can be blended right in the pot without spattering the stove. Two speeds, a whisk and a 20 oz beaker cover most of what a stick blender gets asked to do.
What owners say: Owners reach for it most for soups and smoothies, say it comes apart in seconds to wash and mention making mayonnaise in moments; the build feels solid in the hand.
A closer look: Get the bell under the surface before pressing the button, and save the turbo setting for a final burst on thicker mixtures. The whisk clicks onto the same motor for eggs or a quick dressing, and the shaft clicks off so the motor body only needs a wipe.
- Bell guard stops splashes
- Turbo for thicker mixtures
- Shaft clicks off for cleaning
- 3-year warranty
Best for: Soups and smoothies
- Power
- 350W
- Speeds
- 2
- Attachments
- Whisk, 20 oz beaker
- Blending shaft
- Stainless steel

#2KitchenAid Variable Speed Corded Hand Blender (KHBV53)
$30–$50
The trigger works like a dimmer: squeeze gently to start slow and harder for full speed, so there’s no button-hopping mid-blend. A removable pan guard keeps the blade off the bottom of your pots, and the 3-cup jar has a lid for storing what you’ve made.
What owners say: Owners find it smooth through thick chowders and stews as well as baby food, and the squeeze-for-speed trigger wins people over; durability is mixed, with some still going strong and others stopping after a year.
A closer look: Fit the pan guard before blending in a nonstick or enameled pot, and tilt the pot slightly so the blade stays covered. The 8 in arm reaches the bottom of a deep stockpot and can go in the dishwasher, while the motor body just needs a wipe.
- 4-point stainless steel blade
- Reaches the bottom of stockpots
- Arm is dishwasher safe
- Jar lid for storing blends
Best for: Fine control in the pot
- Power
- 180W
- Speeds
- Variable trigger
- Attachments
- 3-cup jar, pan guard
- Blending shaft
- Stainless steel

#3Turelar 400W Immersion Blender, 2-Speed (HB-8816)
$10–$20
Just the stick, done well: a 400W copper motor, two speeds plus turbo and a slim stainless steel shaft that reaches into narrow jars as well as deep pots. A ring at the top lets it hang on a hook instead of taking up a drawer.
What owners say: Owners call it strong for its size and like how easily it goes together and comes apart for washing, especially after smoothies, soups and sauces; a few had one stop within months.
Heads up: Turelar says to run it in bursts of a minute or less, so blend in short goes rather than one long run.
A closer look: The two-prong blade is designed not to snag stringy greens or herb stems, which makes it a tidy choice for green smoothies and pesto. Unplug it before taking the shaft off, rinse the shaft under the faucet, and wipe the motor end with a damp cloth.
- Slim shaft fits narrow jars
- 2-prong blade won’t snag greens
- Hanging ring for storage
- Copper motor
- Run one minute at most
Best for: Narrow jars and stringy greens
- Power
- 400W
- Speeds
- 2 + turbo
- Attachments
- None
- Blending shaft
- Stainless steel

#4Bonsenkitchen Immersion Blender with Chopper, 12-Speed (HB3403)
$30–$50
A full set: the 500W blender, a whisk, a 24 oz beaker and a 17 oz chopper bowl for onions, nuts and herbs, with 12 speeds and turbo on the handle.
What owners say: Owners like that it’s easy to use and clean and handles smoothies and sauces with power to spare, some blending sauces right on the stove; how long it lasts divides them.
A closer look: Use a low speed on the chopper for a rough dice and turbo in short pulses for nuts or breadcrumbs. The beaker and the chopper bowl can go in the dishwasher, but keep the motor body and the whisk head out of it.
- Chops onions, nuts and herbs
- Anti-splash blade guard
- Beaker and bowl dishwasher safe
Best for: Blending, whisking and quick dicing
- Power
- 500W
- Speeds
- 12 + turbo
- Attachments
- Whisk, chopper, beaker
- Blending shaft
- Stainless steel

#5Braun MultiQuick 7 3-in-1 Hand Blender with Chopper (MQ7035)
$75–$100
Braun’s ACTIVEBlade shaft flexes so the blade moves up and down as it spins, which Braun says gives 250% more cutting surface, and the 500W motor runs from one button you simply press harder for more speed. A 2-cup chopper and a whisk come with it.
What owners say: Owners like its power through cream cheese and soups, how easily it cleans and the squeeze-to-speed control; most expect it to last, though a few had the motor give out early.
A closer look: A gentle press gives a coarse, chunky texture and a firm one a smooth purée, so salsa and soup come from the same button. The chopper handles onions, herbs and nuts, and EasyClick Plus swaps the attachments in a second.
- Blade moves up and down
- Press harder for smoother results
- Swaps attachments in a second
- Bell guard stops splashes
- 3-year warranty
Best for: Hard foods and chopping
- Power
- 500W
- Speeds
- Variable (SmartSpeed)
- Attachments
- Whisk, chopper, beaker
- Blending shaft
- Stainless steel
