A robot vacuum is a low cleaner that runs around the floors by itself, on a schedule or from an app, then returns to its base to charge. Simpler ones find their way with bump and drop sensors; LiDAR models spin a laser to map the house, so they can clean a single room or skip a no-go zone.

Most here mop as well as vacuum; the Roomba 105 is the one that only vacuums. Without a self-emptying dock, the bin is yours to empty, while some docks also refill the water and wash and dry the mop pads. Suction is quoted in pascals (Pa) where the maker gives it; iRobot doesn’t for the Roomba 105.

What matters

  • Mops that lift on carpet, if you have rugs.
  • A height that clears the gap under your lowest sofa or bed.
  • No brush roll, or an anti-tangle one, for pet hair or long hair.
  • The Wi-Fi band it needs, if your router splits 2.4GHz and 5GHz.

A slim 2.99 in robot that vacuums and mops at the same time, with 5,000Pa suction for pet hair on hard floors and short or medium-pile carpet. It runs up to 150 minutes in quiet mode and takes orders from the app, a remote, a voice assistant or its own button.

What owners say: Owners find it picks up dust and pet hair on hard floors and carpet alike, quietly, and like the mopping between deeper cleans. Battery life and how well it holds up vary between homes, and so does how well it gets around furniture.

Heads up: It cleans without making a map, using bump and drop sensors, so close the doors to rooms you want it to skip.

A closer look: Zig-zag mode covers a whole room, while Spot and Edge are for a spill or the line along the baseboards. Fill the water tank only for hard floors, and empty the bin after each run so the suction stays strong.

  • Vacuums and mops at once
  • 150 minutes in quiet mode
  • App, remote and voice control
  • Spot, edge and zig-zag modes

Best for: Shedding pets and mixed floors

A robot and dock that look after themselves: the dock empties the bin, refills the water, and washes the two spinning mops in hot water before drying them with warm air. Strong 20,000Pa suction lifts pet hair from carpets, and an arm swings a mop out to reach right along the baseboards.

What owners say: Owners rate how it cleans wood and carpet alike, how neatly it steers around obstacles and how accurately it maps the house, and they like setting routines. Some had one fail inside a year, and the price puts others off.

Heads up: It only connects to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, so pick that network (not the 5GHz one) when setting it up in the app.

A closer look: Let it map the house on its first run, then name the rooms in the app so it can be sent to just the kitchen after dinner. On mixed floors it vacuums the carpets first and leaves its mops behind for them, so rugs stay dry.

  • Arm mops along baseboards
  • Mops lift 15mm over rugs
  • Warm-air mop drying
  • Refills its own water tank
  • Anti-tangle brushes

Only 3 in tall, it vacuums and mops in one go, with an electronically controlled water tank and no brush roll for pet hair to wind around. It runs for about two hours on a charge and heads back to its base on its own.

What owners say: Dog owners say it keeps up with the hair and dust, and they like how quiet it is and how long it runs. Its mapping is hit and miss for some, and it can wedge itself between a rug and an end table.

A closer look: Clip on the mop pad and fill the tank for hard floors, and leave the mop off on days it’s doing the rugs, since it’s made for hard floors and low-pile carpet. A spare HEPA filter and four side brushes come in the box, so the first replacements are covered.

  • No brush roll to tangle
  • 4 water-flow settings
  • About two hours a charge
  • Spare HEPA filter and brushes
  • App, remote and voice control

Best for: Pet hair without a tangled brush

A straightforward vacuum with LiDAR mapping: it learns the house, cleans in neat rows, and can be sent to one room or kept out of another from the Roomba Home app. It recharges and picks up where it left off, and iRobot puts its suction at 70 times that of its old Roomba 600 robots.

What owners say: It picks up everyday dirt and pet hair well, owners say. Some wanted a deeper clean, a few had charging trouble or found it didn’t make it back to the dock, and many call it loud.

A closer look: With no self-emptying dock, plan on emptying the bin every run or two, and let the app tell you when the filter needs changing. Spot cleaning works over one patch for up to five minutes, handy for crumbs under the dinner table.

  • Room cleaning and keep-out zones
  • Recharges and resumes
  • Up to 5-minute spot cleaning
  • Works with Alexa, Siri, Google

Lower than the Roomba 105, so it gets under more furniture, with a dock that takes over the chores: it empties debris for up to 90 days, refills the water, and washes and heat-dries the mop pads after every run. SmartScrub presses harder on dried-on mess, and the pads lift 10mm over rugs.

What owners say: Pet hair and mopping are its strong points, owners say. The rest is mixed: some had it stop working within months or get stuck, others had charging trouble, and views differ on noise and on carpets.

A closer look: Pick from four modes in the app, from vacuum only to vacuuming first and mopping after for a deeper clean, and send it straight to the kitchen or entryway when those need it most. Its extending brushes reach into corners and along the baseboards.
