A sleeping bag is an insulated bag you zip yourself into, so body heat stays around you through the night. The first sold commercially is thought to be the Euklisia Rug, patented in 1876 by Pryce Pryce-Jones of Newtown in Wales. Rectangular bags give room to turn over, and some unzip flat into a quilt; mummy bags taper toward the feet, so there’s less air to warm.

Every bag here is rectangular, and each temperature is the maker’s own figure. Comfort temperature means the coldest night the maker says you’ll sleep comfortably in it; treat an ‘extreme’ figure as a survival limit for a few hours, not a temperature to sleep at.

What matters

  • A comfort temperature a few degrees below your coldest night.
  • A length that fits the tallest camper.
  • Weight, if it’s going in a backpack.

#1Coleman Heritage Big & Tall 10°F Flannel Sleeping Bag

$50–$75

Best overall

9.3/10Picked Rating

A big rectangular bag, 84 × 40 in, with 5 lb of Holofill 808 inside a heavy cotton shell and a soft flannel lining. Coleman rates it to 10°F, far colder than anything else here, and its FiberLock construction stops the fill from shifting.

What owners say: Soft flannel, plenty of room for the legs and real warmth on freezing nights are what owners mention most, and the zipper earns praise too, with some saying theirs has lasted for years.

Heads up: It weighs 8.9 lb, so it’s one to carry from the car, not on a backpacking trip.

A closer look: Coleman gives a single 10°F rating rather than a comfort range, so on a night near that, wear a warm layer and lay a camping pad underneath, as cold creeps up from the ground. Its Wrap ‘N’ Roll system bundles it up for the trunk, and the whole bag can go in the washing machine.

  • Cotton shell, flannel lining
  • Machine washable
  • No-snag zipper
  • 5-year limited warranty

Best for: Cold nights and car camping

#2VENTURE 4TH XXL Sleeping Bag (90 × 39 in)

$50–$75

9.1/10Picked Rating

Extra long and wide at 90 × 39 in, so tall campers and side sleepers can stretch out, yet at 4.4 lb it packs into a compression sack for the trail. VENTURE 4TH rates it comfortable from 30°F to 70°F and backs it with a lifetime replacement guarantee.

What owners say: Warm even on cold, windy nights and roomy enough to turn over in, which side sleepers especially like; one owner found room for two. The zipper is the weak spot for some, coming apart in places.

A closer look: The two-way zipper opens from the bottom too, so on a mild night you can cool your feet without letting the cold in at the shoulders. Shake it out of the compression sack as soon as you reach camp so the filling lofts back up, and store it loose at home.

  • Two-way anti-snag zipper
  • Compression sack included
  • Water-resistant polyester shell
  • Lifetime replacement guarantee

#3MalloMe 3-Season Sleeping Bag

$20–$30

8.9/10Picked Rating

A roomy rectangular bag, comfortable from 50°F to 77°F and long enough for a six-foot adult. MalloMe sells it as a spring-to-fall bag, and it doubles as a sleepover bag the rest of the year.

What owners say: Warm and well made, it rolls up and stows easily, and families use it for indoor sleepovers as much as for camping. It’s too small for some adults, and a few had the zipper give out completely.

A closer look: Pull the hood’s drawstrings in on chilly nights, and fasten the strap over the zipper so it doesn’t creep open. With a 50°F lower limit it’s a bag for summer camp and mild nights; on a cooler spring weekend, add a fleece blanket inside.

  • Drawstring hood
  • Strap keeps the zipper closed
  • Snag-free two-way zippers
  • Fits a six-foot adult
  • Machine washable

#4Agemore Cotton Flannel Double Sleeping Bag (2 person)

Best for two

8.9/10Picked Rating

One big bag for two, 86.6 × 59 in, lined with brushed cotton flannel. Zippers down both sides let either sleeper get out without waking the other, and it splits into two single bags or opens flat into two blankets.

What owners say: Plenty of room for two and soft and cozy inside, owners report, warm enough for mild-weather trips; the zippers have let a few down.

A closer look: Comfortable from 41°F to 59°F, it’s a bag for spring, summer and fall rather than frosty nights. Packed, its compression sack is about 17 × 11.5 in, so check there’s room in the trunk beside the tent; at home it doubles as a spare bed when friends stay over.

  • Splits into two single bags
  • Opens flat into two blankets
  • Zippers down both sides
  • Brushed cotton flannel lining

8.9/10Picked Rating

At 1.5 lb it’s about half the weight of anything else here, and it squeezes into a compression sack about 8 × 5 in. It’s a warm-weather bag, comfortable at around 68°F, for summer backpacking, hostels and hot nights when a heavier bag would be too much.

What owners say: Light and compact enough that some owners pack it in a carry-on, and it’s their go-to for summer camping and hikes. It’s a snug cut, though: a few say it’s too narrow for many men.

A closer look: REDCAMP’s range bottoms out at 59°F, so on a cooler trip use it as a liner inside a warmer bag or throw a fleece over it. Two of them zip together into a double, and at 75 in long it suits most adults up to six feet but not the very tall.

  • Two zip into a double
  • Doubles as a bag liner
  • Inside pocket
  • 365-day warranty
