A smart scale weighs you and sends a tiny electrical signal through your bare feet to estimate body fat, muscle and water, then passes the readings to a phone app over Bluetooth. Most measure through the feet alone; scales with a handle add electrodes for the hands, for readings by arm, leg and trunk. The scale’s own screen may show only a few readings or nearly all of them.

Treat the body-fat and muscle figures as estimates, best read as a trend: weigh at the same time of day and compare week to week. Each scale here shares readings with Apple Health, Google Fit, Samsung Health or Fitbit. For anyone with a pacemaker, arboleaf and GE say their scales aren’t suitable, and Etekcity says to ask a doctor first.

What matters

  • A weight limit with room to spare.
  • Weight shown in fine steps, 0.1 lb or finer.

The extra-large, bright display is easy to read from standing, and Baby mode lets you hold a baby or the cat while it takes your own weight away. It reads in 0.1 lb steps, 0.05 lb under 22 lb, and tracks 13 measurements in its app.

What owners say: Readings come out accurate and consistent, setup over Bluetooth is painless and it syncs with MyFitnessPal. People tracking weight loss like that it tells them more than just a weight.

A closer look: Everyone in the house can have a profile, as the app takes unlimited users, and readings can pass on to Apple Health, Samsung Health, Google Fit or Fitbit. Zero-Current mode is there for anyone who only wants a weight, with no signal sent through the feet.

  • No-current mode for weight only
  • Unlimited users
  • Syncs with Apple Health, Fitbit
  • Mode for weighing light items

Best for: A clear display, babies and pets

#2arboleaf 8-Electrode Smart Scale with Handle (CS10K)

Best full-body scale

9.4/10Picked Rating

Hold the handle as you stand and it measures through hands and feet, with eight electrodes and two frequencies, for fuller body-composition readings than a feet-only scale. Seven readings show on the scale itself, and the app adds 50 more, including fat and muscle for each arm, leg and the trunk.

What owners say: Setup is easy, the readings stay consistent and the app syncs smoothly with Fitbit. How much it reveals goes down well, and so do its looks and build.

Heads up: Don’t use it with a pacemaker or during pregnancy, as arboleaf warns: like every body-fat scale, it passes a tiny current through the body.

A closer look: If a weight looks wrong, step on and off once and wait for 0.0 before stepping back on, which zeroes it again. Hold the handle with relaxed arms and keep still until it finishes, as the arm, leg and trunk figures are only worth comparing from one steady reading to the next.

  • Handle reads hands and feet
  • Arm, leg and trunk readings
  • Recognizes up to 8 profiles
  • Syncs with Fitbit

Best for: Tracking muscle in arms and legs

#3RENPHO Elis 1 Smart Scale

9.1/10Picked Rating

A slim glass scale that sends 13 readings, from weight and BMI to muscle mass and a body-fat estimate, to the Renpho Health app, which passes them on to Apple Health, Samsung Health or Fitbit.

What owners say: Tracking weight, BMI and the rest through the app is simple, and it links up easily with Fitbit and Samsung Health. Accuracy is the sticking point for some, who get inconsistent readings.

A closer look: It keeps readings when the phone isn’t nearby and syncs them next time, so there’s no need to open the app every morning. There’s also a Renpho app for Apple Watch (not the original Series 1).

  • Stores readings until synced
  • Slim glass platform
  • Apple Watch app
  • Unlimited users
  • Baby mode

Best for: Syncing with health apps

#4Ovutek Smart Scale with 5 in LED Display

$20–$30

9.1/10Picked Rating

A 5-inch LED screen shows body fat, BMI, water and muscle on the scale itself, along with the week’s weight trend, so the app is only needed for the full set of 14 readings. The 11 × 11 in tempered glass platform gives plenty of room to stand, and the app passes readings on to Apple Health, Google Fit and Fitbit.

What owners say: Owners rate its accuracy and the spread of health data it tracks, and say it pairs with a phone easily and looks good in the bathroom. A few see the weight drift by about a quarter of a pound.

A closer look: Guest mode weighs a visitor without setting up a profile, and the light-item mode turns it into a package scale from about 3.5 oz (100 g). The breathing light around the edge can be set to a color that suits the bathroom, or the no-number mode hides the figure for anyone who’d rather watch the trend than the weight.

  • Weekly trend on the screen
  • 11 × 11 in glass platform
  • Guest mode for visitors
  • No-number mode hides weight
  • Colored light around the edge

#5GE Fit Plus LN Smart Scale (11.8 in, 500 lb)

9.1/10Picked Rating

A wide 11.8-inch glass platform and a 500 lb limit, 100 lb more than the rest here, suit bigger and taller users, and once it’s paired the 5.33-inch color screen shows every reading on the scale itself. Fourteen measurements go to the Fit Profile app, which shares with Apple Health and Google Fit.

What owners say: Owners like how easily it pairs, how much it tells them, water levels included, and the bright colors on the screen. Accuracy is where they differ: some find it closer than their old scale, others get readings that jump around.

A closer look: After a one-time pairing with your phone at setup, the screen shows the full set of readings, so a quick weigh-in doesn’t need the app open. The anti-tip base and tempered glass make it a steady choice for anyone heavier or less sure on their feet, and three AAA batteries come in the box.

  • 11.8 in wide platform
  • Anti-tip base
  • Tempered glass top
  • Apple Health and Google Fit
