A tire inflator is a small air compressor that lives in the car, for putting air back into a low tire. Compact digital inflators run from the car’s 12V outlet or their own battery and stop by themselves at the pressure you set. The heavy-duty ones here clamp to the car battery for the power to fill truck and RV tires, but have no auto-stop: you watch the gauge and switch them off yourself.

Cordless inflators skip the cable but need to be kept charged, while a 12V plug-in never runs out; AstroAI’s works either way. Most can only run for a set stretch before they need to cool, so filling a whole set from low can mean a rest between tires. Some come with settings or adapters for bikes and balls.

What matters

  • A cord or hose long enough to reach all four wheels.
  • A built-in light, for a low tire after dark.
  • Auto shut-off at the pressure you set.

Runs from its own 20V battery or the car’s 12V outlet, so a dead battery never leaves you stuck. Set the pressure and it stops by itself; AstroAI says it takes a car tire from 30 to 36 PSI in under 40 seconds, and a full charge does about four tires.

What owners say: Easy to set up and use, owners say, with a battery that stays charged for a long time, and some reach 35 PSI in a minute or two, quicker than the gas station. The auto shut-off splits them: most find it stops right on time, but a few had it fail after a handful of uses.

A closer look: There’s no wall charger in the box, just a USB-C cable, so charge it from a phone charger and recharge it every couple of months to have it ready for the first cold morning. It runs for up to 20 minutes at a stretch, so rest it between tires when filling a set from low.

  • About four tires per charge
  • Runs 20 minutes, then rests
  • Shows PSI, bar and kPa
  • No wall charger included
  • 2-year warranty

Best for: Cordless top-offs, with a 12V backup

#2VIAIR 88P Portable Air Compressor (12V)

9.3/10Picked Rating

A small but serious compressor rather than a gadget: it clamps straight onto the car battery, fills tires up to 33 inches at up to 120 PSI, and has a 16-foot hose and a 10-foot cord, enough to reach every wheel on a pickup or an RV.

What owners say: One owner tops off a tire in about five seconds, and the long cord reaches all four wheels; it copes with RV tires up to 60 PSI too. It’s quieter than many expect, but it does get hot while it runs.

Heads up: There’s no auto-stop: watch the dial and switch it off when the tire reaches the pressure you want.

A closer look: Start the engine before clipping the clamps to the battery, as VIAIR advises, then twist the brass chuck onto the valve so it can’t blow off. It runs for 25 minutes at a time at 30 PSI before it needs to cool, plenty for four car tires.

  • Twists onto the tire valve
  • Tires up to 33 in
  • Runs 25 minutes before cooling
  • Carry bag included

The 88P’s bigger brother, for trucks, Jeeps and SUVs: 2.3 CFM and up to 150 PSI from a compressor that clamps straight onto the battery, with a 25-foot hose to reach every wheel and a 5-in-1 inflator/deflator for airing down before the trail and back up after it.

What owners say: Owners say it pumps tires faster than other 12V models, feels built like a tank and is easy to use, and it’s the one they pack for off-roading and emergencies. The 8-foot power cord is the gripe: several call it barely long enough.

Heads up: There’s no auto-stop here either: pause it and check the hose gauge, which reads up to 100 PSI.

A closer look: VIAIR rates it to run about a third of the time at 100 PSI, so on a big rig give it a rest between tires. Stand it on its sand tray to keep grit out of the motor, and pack the hose in the bag’s second compartment so it doesn’t tangle with the battery clamps’ cables.

  • Airs tires down for trails
  • Sand tray and carry bag
  • Tires up to 33 in

Set the pressure on the screen and it stops by itself: a compact 12V inflator that takes a typical car tire from 30 to 36 PSI in under a minute, with a 10-foot cord, a three-mode LED light and a carry bag.

What owners say: Car tires, bikes and basketballs all get the treatment, and one owner took an e-bike tire from flat to 40 PSI in 10 to 15 seconds. It’s compact and simple to set, but not everyone finds it fast.

A closer look: The screen shows the current and target pressure side by side, so it’s easy to see how far there is to go. The hose is only about 2 ft long, so set the inflator on the ground by the wheel, and wind the cord into its built-in storage afterward so it packs neatly back into the bag.

  • Shows current and target pressure
  • Built-in cord storage
  • Carry bag and adapters

Small enough to live in the glove box, and it stops by itself at the pressure you set, so a top-off takes a couple of minutes in the driveway.

What owners say: Compact and simple, it’s the kind of thing owners keep in the car for emergencies. Battery life and power both divide them; a few found theirs never built any real pressure.

A closer look: Check the tires when they’re cold, before a drive; the right pressures are on a sticker inside the driver’s door or in the owner’s manual. Its USB port doubles as a power bank for a phone in an emergency, and after 15 minutes’ running it needs a 10-minute rest.

  • Doubles as a power bank
  • Car, bike and ball modes
  • Fits in the glove box
  • Needs rest after 15 minutes
