A stand-up weed puller does a trowel’s job from standing height. Center the claws over the weed, step on the pedal to drive them into the soil around the root, then lean the handle back: the claws close on the taproot and lift it out with a small plug of soil. They’re at their best on lawn weeds with one deep root, such as dandelions, thistles and plantain.

Getting the whole root matters, because dandelions can regrow from pieces of root left in the ground. Grampa’s, Fiskars and Walensee all say their weeders work best in soft, damp ground, so weed after rain or a watering; stony or hard clay ground is harder going.

What matters

  • A handle long enough to work without stooping.
  • A light handle, bamboo or aluminum, for a big lawn.
  • An ejector, if you’d rather not touch the weeds.
  • A lifetime guarantee, since handles and parts can break.

Pulls a dandelion’s taproot from standing height: center the four claws over the plant, step on the footpad and lean back on the 45 in bamboo handle. First made in Seattle in 1913, it was revived in 1999 by an Oregon family who found one in a garage.

What owners say: Owners find it lifts dandelions out root and all with very little effort, and plenty say they enjoy weeding with it. Most expect it to last for years, though a few had one break.

A closer look: There’s no ejector, so the weed comes off the claws by hand or with a knock against the side of a bucket. Grampa’s says it does best in softer soil after rain or a watering and can struggle in hard clay or rocky ground, so water a dry lawn the evening before.

  • Built-in footpad
  • Claws pinch the root out
  • Lifetime guarantee
  • Suits soft soil after rain

#2Grampa’s Weeder Stand-Up Weed Puller, Steel Handle (MW-01)

$30–$50

8.6/10Picked Rating

Grampa’s classic four-claw head on an all-steel 45 in handle with foam grips, for weeding season after season, with a lifetime guarantee. It twists apart into three pieces, so it stores in a shed corner or a car trunk.

What owners say: It gets most of the root out, owners report, and goes together and comes apart easily. A few had parts give way, and the weight divides them: reassuringly solid to some, heavy going for others.

A closer look: At about 4 lb it’s heavier than the bamboo original, which helps the claws bite but tires the arms sooner on a big lawn. Twist the three sections tight before starting, and keep it for dandelions, thistles, crabgrass and anything else with a taproot, in soft ground.

  • Twists apart into 3 pieces
  • Foam grips
  • Lifetime guarantee
  • Weighs about 4 lb

Four serrated stainless claws grip the root, a viewing window in the foot platform shows exactly where they will land, and the eject mechanism in the handle drops the weed into a bucket without a hand touching it. The aluminum shaft keeps it to about 2.5 lb.

What owners say: Dandelions come out root and all without any bending or kneeling, owners say, and many enjoy using it. Durability and value split them, with several reporting breakages.

A closer look: Line the window up over the crown of the weed, step down, pull the handle back, then lift and work the ejector over a bucket. In hard, compacted or clay ground, Fiskars suggests watering 30 to 60 minutes beforehand so the claws go in cleanly.

  • Window shows where claws land
  • Serrated claws grip the root
  • Lifetime warranty
  • Weighs about 2.5 lb

The classic stand-up design: a 44-inch bamboo handle, a four-claw steel head and a foot platform to step the claws into the soil around a root. WilFiks designed it with older gardeners in mind, so the whole job is done standing up.

What owners say: Thistles and bigger weeds come out easily, owners report, and several find it a good value. The handle is the weak spot for a few who had one snap, and opinions differ on how sharp the claws are.

A closer look: Step down on the platform with the claws straddling the weed’s crown, then rock the handle back toward you until the root lets go. Bamboo lasts longer kept out of the rain between sessions, and a lawn still damp from a shower lets the claws sink in with far less effort.

#5Walensee Stand-Up Weed Puller with 3 Claws (WT-001G)

$20–$30

8.2/10Picked Rating

An all-steel weeder with three 2.75 in claws and a foot pedal, pitched at dandelions, thistles, plantain and clover. The claws grip the root from three sides, and a tilt to one side brings the weed up.

What owners say: Weeds come up whole, owners find, and it spares a bad back the bending. Some had the spring or the plastic foot give out, and a few say it slips straight out of the ground.

Heads up: Walensee’s advice is to moisten dry ground before weeding and not to use it in gravelly soil.

A closer look: Pull dandelions before they go to seed, and drop each one straight into a bucket rather than leaving it on the lawn, where the seed heads can still blow about. It’s steel throughout, so a wipe and a dry corner of the shed keep it in good order.

  • 2.75 in long claws
