An air fryer is a compact convection oven for the counter: a fan drives very hot air around a basket, so fries, wings and vegetables crisp with a spoonful of oil or none. Single-basket models are narrower and cheaper; two-zone models have two baskets, or one with a divider, so two foods cook at different settings and finish together.

Capacity is quoted in litres or quarts, and a litre is a little more than a quart. Food browns best in one layer, so a family’s fries go in two rounds, with a shake halfway. Two-zone fryers are wide, often 40 cm (16 in) or more, so measure the counter, and leave the gap behind and above that the maker asks for.

What matters

  • Width, measured against the counter space you have.
  • A basket and crisper plate that go in the dishwasher.
  • Top heat: most fryers reach 230°C (450°F) or more; a few stop at about 200°C (400°F), which takes longer to crisp.

Supper for three to five fits in its 5.7-litre (6-quart) square basket, without the width of a two-basket model. Its five-speed fan crisps food fast across 30 to 230°C (90 to 450°F), and it runs quietly enough to talk over, even on the top speed. The nonstick basket and accessories go in the dishwasher.

What owners say: Owners find it simple from the very first use and quick to cook, and it cleans up easily; they rate how quietly it runs and how much the basket holds for its size, and no recurring complaint comes up.

A closer look: The square basket takes about 20 wings in one layer on the crisper plate, enough for a plateful to share. Preheating is optional and off unless you choose it, so most things go straight in. Leave the 13 cm (5 in) of space Cosori asks for behind and above it.

  • Quiet enough to talk over
  • Five fan speeds
  • PFAS-free ceramic coating
  • Preheating is optional
  • Square basket

Two baskets that cook separately and finish together, so the chicken and the fries land on the table at the same time. For most weeknight dinners it quietly takes over from the oven.

What owners say: Owners say it makes everyday cooking simpler and quicker, with suppers ready in minutes, and they rate the results and how much it can do; cleaning up is straightforward too.

Heads up: At almost 40 cm (16 in) wide it takes a good stretch of counter, so measure before buying.

A closer look: Put the fries in one basket and the chicken in the other, give each its own time and temperature, and press Smart Finish so they’re ready together; Match Cook copies one side to the other for a double batch. Together the baskets take up to 1.8 kg (4 lb) of fries or wings.

  • Both baskets finish together
  • Doubles batches with one setting
  • Fan and heater per basket

One wide basket with a removable divider: leave it in for two 4.3-litre (4.5-quart) zones that cook two foods two ways and finish together, or lift it out for a whole chicken in a single 8.6-litre (9-quart) basket. It suits families who want two-zone cooking most nights but the room for one big roast now and then.

What owners say: Owners call it a real time saver at supper, with two foods cooking side by side at different temperatures, and they find the non-stick basket quick to clean and roomy enough for several portions; food comes out crisp batch after batch.

A closer look: With the divider in, give each zone its own setting and press Sync so both finish together, or use Match to run one setting across both for a double batch. Two crisper plates come in the box, one for each side. Lift the divider out for a whole chicken or a big batch of fries.

  • Removable divider
  • Both zones finish together
  • Two crisper plates included
  • PFAS-free ceramic coating

Ninja’s compact single basket, which Ninja says takes up to 1.8 kg (4 lb) of fries, with four functions from air fry to dehydrate and heat up to 204°C (400°F). At under 29 cm (11.3 in) across, it suits a smaller kitchen where a two-zone fryer won’t fit.

What owners say: Owners say everything they put in turns out well and it’s easy to get the hang of, and a few rate it for grilled sandwiches; the cooking speed, the size and the quick clean-up all go down well.

A closer look: Leave the crisper plate in for fries, wings and sausages so they sit clear of the fat, and lift it out to bake in a small ovenproof dish that fits the basket. The recipe book and cooking charts in the box are a handy guide to times and temperatures for the first few weeks.

  • Non-stick basket

A window in the basket shows the fries browning without pulling the drawer and letting the heat out. Philips unveiled the first Airfryer in Berlin in 2010, and this small one keeps the idea simple: a touchscreen with nine presets, 13 ways to cook and room for supper for two.

What owners say: Setup takes no time and it’s straightforward from the first basket, by owners’ reports. It’s quiet in use, sized right for two to four people, heats fast and wipes clean without fuss, and many find it good value.

A closer look: The keep-warm preset holds food hot when supper’s ready before everyone else is, and the breakfast and cake presets go beyond fries and chicken. Lift the StarPlate out to wash it, as crumbs and fat collect underneath, and pat fresh-cut fries dry before they go in for the crispest finish.
