A fineliner is a felt-tip pen with a fine, firm tip that draws the same even line from the first page to the last. Packs come two ways: black pens in several widths, from hair-fine for detail to bold for outlines, or one width in several colours for notes and journals. Widths are given in millimetres or, on some brands, as codes.

The ink makes the bigger difference. Pigment ink is waterproof or water-resistant once dry and resists fading, so a drawing can be painted or coloured over; water-based ink suits writing and colouring but runs under a wet brush. The finest tips are delicate, so a light touch keeps them sharp.

What matters

  • Waterproof once dry, not just water-resistant, for ink and wash.
  • A width or two under 0.3 mm for small details and hatching.
  • The pen count, since a bigger pack often costs less per pen.

#1Sakura Pigma Micron Fineliners (6 black, 0.20–0.50 mm)

$10–$20

Best overall

9.4/10Picked Rating

Six black widths, from 005 (0.20 mm) to 08 (0.50 mm), in archival pigment ink that’s waterproof, fade-resistant and happy under a watercolour wash: one set that handles sketching, inking and neat writing. Sakura brought out the Micron in 1982 with Pigma, which it calls the first ink to combine pigment and water.

What owners say: Owners use them for writing, drawing and outlining, with no bleeding or feathering, and like the spread of tip sizes. How long the ink lasts is the mixed point.

A closer look: The sizes go by code, not millimetres: 005 is the finest, for hatching and tiny details, and 08 the boldest, for outlines and headings. The ink is quick-drying and won’t bleed through most papers, but give it a moment before rubbing out the pencil underneath.

  • Fine enough for hatching
  • Won’t bleed through most papers
  • Quick-drying ink

Best for: Drawing, inking and ink-and-wash

#2STAEDTLER triplus Fineliners (10 colours, 0.3 mm)

$10–$20

Best for colour

9.3/10Picked Rating

Ten colours in one 0.3 mm width, for notes, planners and colour-coded journals, in a triangular barrel that rests easily between the fingers. Staedtler’s Dry Safe ink can be left uncapped for days without drying out, so a pen left open on the desk still writes the next morning.

What owners say: Owners love the bright colours and how smoothly they write, with no bleeding through the page or smearing, and find the ink lasts.

A closer look: The ink is water-based, so it’s for writing and colouring rather than painting over, and it washes out of most fabrics if a pen meets a sleeve. Staedtler makes them airplane-safe, with pressure equalization so they don’t leak on a flight, and the barrels are 97% recycled plastic.

  • Triangular barrel, easy grip
  • Left uncapped for days
  • Washes out of most fabrics
  • Won’t leak on a plane

Best for: Bullet journals and planners

#3Ohuhu Fineliner Drawing Pens (8 black: 7 widths and a brush)

$10–$20

Best with a brush tip

9.2/10Picked Rating

A brush pen for thick, swelling strokes joins seven black widths from 0.2 to 1 mm, all in quick-drying, fade-proof pigment ink that resists water. Each cap is coded with its size, so the right one is easy to grab mid-drawing.

What owners say: Owners are impressed with the quality, find the pens work well on marker paper and like their versatility, though smudging and durability divide them.

A closer look: Ink the lines first and let them dry fully before colouring over them with alcohol markers, which Ohuhu warns can smear wet ink. They work best on smooth drawing paper, and the brush pen is the one for lettering and bold outlines.

  • Size marked on every cap
  • Brush pen for lettering

Best for: Colouring over with markers

#4STAEDTLER Pigment Liner Fineliners (8 black, 0.05–1.2 mm)

$10–$20

Best budget

8.9/10Picked Rating

From a hair-fine 0.05 mm to a bold 1.2 mm, eight black widths with long metal-clad tips that run neatly along a ruler or a stencil. The pigment ink is waterproof and lightfast, so drawings can be inked over pencil and painted on top, and it has the most line widths here.

What owners say: Detail colouring, drawing and artwork are what owners use them for, and the ink flows smoothly without bleeding, smearing or running, with plenty of sizes in one pack; drying time and durability get mixed reviews.

A closer look: Keep the pen upright so the metal tip runs along the ruler’s edge, and lines stay crisp on plans and technical drawings. Staedtler rates the black to sit uncapped for at least 12 hours without drying out, handy through a long drawing session.

  • Long tips for rulers
  • Survives 12 hours uncapped

Best for: Technical drawing with a ruler

#5uni PIN Fineliner Drawing Pens (6 black, 0.03–0.8 mm)

$10–$20

8.8/10Picked Rating

Its smallest tip draws a 0.03 mm line, the finest here, and the six black widths go up to 0.8 mm, for detailed sketching, diagrams and neat study notes. The pigment ink is water-resistant and quick-drying, and a steel collar round each tip protects it against a ruler or stencil.

What owners say: Fine, precise lines and a good spread of sizes win owners over, though drying time, durability and smudging all come up as mixed points.

A closer look: A clear window in each barrel shows how much ink is left, so a pen can be replaced before it runs dry mid-drawing. Once dry, the ink resists water, so notes and sketches survive a splash from a coffee cup.

  • Steel collar protects each tip
  • Window shows the ink left
  • Quick-drying ink

Best for: Fine detail and study notes
