A headlamp is a small light on an elastic band that points wherever you look, leaving both hands free. Most have a spot beam that reaches down a trail and a wider flood for work at arm’s length, and the lamp tilts down so the light lands on your hands rather than in someone’s eyes. Most are rechargeable over USB or run on AAA batteries, and a few take either.

Weight matters more than it sounds: a lamp under about 100 g sits on the band without bouncing on a run or pressing on the forehead after an hour. The long runtime on the box is usually for the lowest setting; full power can empty a battery in a few hours.

What matters

  • Beam distance and runtime, not the lumen claim on the box.
  • A water rating: IPX4 for rain, IPX7 or more for a soaking.
  • A red light that won’t dazzle you or anyone nearby.
  • USB charging or AAA batteries, depending on where it will live.

Each of the two lamps has a spot beam that reaches 150 m (500 ft), a wide flood for close work and a red light on its own button, so you never cycle through white to reach it. At 75 g (2.65 oz) each you forget they’re on, and they charge by USB-C.

What owners say: Owners call it a bright lamp whose charge lasts, comfortable to wear and good for more than one job. Nothing draws a recurring complaint.

A closer look: With two in the pack, one can hang by the back door for garbage runs and power outages while the other lives in the car or the camping box. Tilt the lamp down for cooking at the campsite or finding something at the bottom of a pack.

  • Spot and flood beams
  • Flashing red mode
  • 45° tilting head
  • Sweat-proof headband
  • Fits adults and kids

Best for: Home and car, a lamp for each

A single lamp with a beam that reaches 150 m (500 ft), three white settings and two red; it weighs 81 g (2.85 oz) and recharges by USB-C. It suits anyone who wants one lamp for the dog walk and the occasional job in the dark rather than a pair.

What owners say: Bright and solidly built, according to owners, with a battery that lasts and charges easily; it stays comfortable, tilts where it’s needed and has carried on in the rain.

A closer look: Charge it before the first use and watch the indicator: red while charging, green when done. Drop to low for a long evening and save high for finding the path; red runs longest of all, the setting to leave on in a tent.

  • Red SOS flash
  • Charge light: red, then green
  • 45° tilting head
  • Sweat-proof headband
  • Scratch-resistant coating

Best for: Walks after dark and odd jobs

Wave a hand to switch it on: exactly what you want when you’re holding a breaker box cover or a muddy leash. Each lamp has a spot and a flood that can run together for a wide, even light.

What owners say: Super bright with a wide spread of light, owners say, and a pair that charge rather than eat batteries. The wave sensor is where opinions split.

Heads up: Expect 3.5 hours a charge with both beams on, or 5 with one, as Blukar’s own listing says, so charge it the night before a long outing.

A closer look: Three of the eight modes are sensor modes: pick one and a wave of the hand in front of the lamp turns it on or off, the setting for jobs with full or muddy hands. Long-press the button to dim it when full power is more than the job needs.

  • Wave-to-switch sensor
  • Sensor works within 15 cm
  • Spot and flood together
  • Stepless dimming
  • 45° tilting head

Best for: Switching on without a free hand

On the trail it gives a 100 m (330 ft) beam, a red light and PowerTap, a tap on the side that jumps between full and dimmed light. It remembers the last brightness used and shows what’s left in the batteries. Black Diamond was formed in 1989 by former employees of climber Yvon Chouinard’s gear company and moved to Salt Lake City in 1991.

What owners say: Excellent quality and super bright, owners say, and handy for all sorts of jobs. Battery life, reliability, getting at the battery compartment and the brightness controls all draw mixed reports.

Heads up: Black Diamond now sells a newer Spot (rated IPX7, a step below this one’s IPX8) and lists the 400 as last season’s model; it’s still sold new by Black Diamond.

A closer look: It runs on the three AAA batteries in the box, or on Black Diamond’s own rechargeable battery, sold separately, for anyone who’d rather charge it. Waterproofing to IPX8 means a downpour or a dropped lamp in a stream won’t end the hike, and at 86 g (3 oz) with batteries it sits lightly through a long day on the trail.

  • Tap the side to dim
  • Remembers the last brightness
  • Battery meter on the lamp
  • Dimmed mode for close work

Best for: Hikers and campers

An 85 m (280 ft) beam from three AAA batteries, which come in the box, with spot and wide settings, a red light and a green one. Energizer’s VisionGuard brings the light up gradually rather than blasting your eyes, and the lens is shatterproof. Keep it in the car or a kitchen drawer for power outages.

What owners say: By owners’ accounts it’s dependable, bright enough to pitch a tent in the rain and good value, though battery life and the controls divide them.

A closer look: Its seven settings run from wide-low for the tent to the spot for the path, and the green light is for reading a map without glare. Keep a spare set of AAAs in the car kit for the night it runs out.

  • Green light for map reading
  • Light comes up gradually
  • Shatterproof lens
  • Drop-tested to 1 metre
  • Flashing red mode
