A heated throw is a couch-sized blanket, usually 127 by 152 cm (50 by 60 in), with fine heating wires inside and a controller on the cord that plugs into a regular wall outlet. Some pair smooth flannel with fluffy sherpa on the other side, some use sherpa on both, and others a single soft fabric throughout. Switched off, it’s an ordinary soft throw.

The controller sets the heat and switches the throw off after a set time, so dozing off doesn’t leave it running. Spread it over you rather than sitting on it or leaving it bunched up while it’s on, and unplug the controller before washing.

What matters

  • More heat settings, for finer steps between warm and hot.
  • A timer you can set, not just one fixed switch-off time.
  • A fabric that feels good on bare skin for hours.

#1Westinghouse Sherpa Heated Throw, Dark Grey

Six heat settings, a timer that switches it off after two to ten hours, and a double layer of soft sherpa that holds the heat; when it needs a wash, it can go through the washer and then the dryer on low.

What owners say: Owners find it warm and quick to heat, soft and comfortable, and like the size, though a few find it big for a lap blanket; the weight gets mixed reports.

A closer look: Sherpa on both sides keeps it warm even unplugged, so it can stay on the couch as an everyday throw. After a wash, let it dry completely before plugging the controller back in; the controller also shuts it off if it ever overheats.

  • Warm even when unplugged
  • Shuts itself off if overheating

Best for: Couch naps and movie nights

Made to switch on and forget: flannel on top and sherpa underneath, six heat levels, a timer from one to ten hours, and a preheat button that runs it at full heat for two hours and then gentler for six, with nothing else to set.

What owners say: Owners say it gets warm fast and feels soft and cuddly, and they like the automatic shut-off and how easy the controls are. Size is the one point that divides them.

A closer look: Press preheat as you sit down and leave the controller alone for the evening; for a shorter sit, pick a level and a timer instead. It draws 100 W from a standard outlet, far less than a space heater.

  • Preheat button, nothing to set
  • Draws just 100 W

Best for: Set-and-forget evenings

#3Sealy Heated Sherpa Throw, Charcoal

$50–$75

8.5/10Picked Rating

Sherpa on both sides like the Westinghouse above: it feels like a real fleece blanket even switched off, its six heat settings sit on one button, and the auto-off runs from two to ten hours.

What owners say: Owners find it very warm and snug and like the look and how light it is, and say the cord reaches far enough.

A closer look: The controller cord unplugs from the throw, so it can go straight in the washer. Sealy suggests air-drying or a low dryer setting, and making sure it’s completely dry before plugging it back in. Sealy says U-shaped wires inside spread the heat evenly across the throw.

  • One-button controller
  • Controller unplugs for washing

#4Hansleep Heated Throw, Ribbed Flannel and Sherpa, Linen

Nine heat levels to fine-tune the warmth, and a timer that sets by the hour, from one to ten, so it can switch off after a nap or run through a long movie. Ribbed flannel on one side and sherpa on the other give it a textured look on the couch.

What owners say: Owners like the feel of the fabric and the look, and say it has held up well over time; how warm it gets and how the controls work divide them.

A closer look: Hansleep says it can be warm in as little as 10 minutes, so there’s little wait once it’s on. To wash it, detach the controller and use a gentle cycle no warmer than 30°C (86°F), with no bleach and no machine drying, and overheat protection cuts the power if it ever runs too hot.

  • Fast to warm up
  • Overheat protection built in

Best for: Getting the warmth exactly right

Simple to run: a soft, reversible jacquard throw in pink, with five heat levels on a single button and a fixed three-hour switch-off.

What owners say: Owners find it comfortable and cozy, think it good value and like the colour; warmth, reliability and durability vary from one owner to the next.

A closer look: Three hours covers an evening on the couch; if it switches off before you get up, turn it back on at the controller. The controller comes off so the throw can go in the washing machine or be washed by hand, and Aheadpret suggests washing it on its own the first time.

  • One-button heat control
