A hot water bottle is a flat, sealed bag filled with hot water from the kettle, then tucked into bed, laid across a sore back or held on the lap. The classic kind is natural rubber; PVC and thermoplastic bottles don’t smell of rubber and suit anyone with a latex allergy. Most hold about 2 litres.

Makers’ advice runs along the same lines: fill it only part way with hot, not boiling, water (most say two-thirds), squeeze out the air before closing the stopper, and keep a cover or a towel between the bottle and bare skin. A bottle that cracks, hardens or leaks at the neck is due for replacing.

What matters

  • A cover in the box, since some bottles come without one.
  • A standard 2 litres for the bed, or a long bottle for a neck or back.
  • A bottle that takes cold water too, for sprains as well as aches.

9.2/10Picked Rating

As much as eight hours of heat in the bed or on an aching back, BICAREE says, from 2 L of odourless PVC in a soft cover, with a wide mouth that makes filling from the kettle less splashy. Filled with cold water, it doubles as an ice pack.

What owners say: Owners find it works better than a heating pad and holds its warmth, and they rate how well it lasts; the seal is the one point they disagree on.

A closer look: Once the stopper is screwed down tight, turn it upside down over the sink to check for leaks before it goes into the bed. It isn’t made for the microwave, so fill it from the kettle every time.

  • Wide mouth for easier filling
  • Leak-tested for 24 hours
  • Odourless, no rubber smell

Best for: Bedtime warmth and aching muscles

#2DICEVER 2L Hot Water Bottle with Soft Cover

9.1/10Picked Rating

A 2 L PVC bottle in a soft cloth cover with embossed moons and stars. Filled with hot water it warms a bed or a sore back; filled with cold, it works as a cold pack for a stiff neck or a knee.

What owners say: Owners call it a real help with aches, warm for hours and soft to hold, and good value; whether it stays leak-free divides them.

A closer look: DICEVER says to fill it three-quarters full with water at about 80°C, hot but well short of boiling, and the bottle has passed a 24-hour leak test at the factory. Kept in its cloth cover under a blanket, it stays warm through the night, by DICEVER’s account.

  • Leak-tested for 24 hours
  • Warm all night, says DICEVER

#3BYXAS 2L Hot Water Bottle with Hand Pocket Cover

$20–$30

9.1/10Picked Rating

The cover has a pocket for your hands, so it warms cold fingers on the couch as well as a bed or a back. Inside is an odourless, latex-free thermoplastic bottle with a ribbed surface, which BYXAS says holds the heat longer than a traditional one.

What owners say: Owners rate it for aches and find it warm for hours, odour-free and leak-free; getting the bottle in and out of the cover is the sticking point.

A closer look: Filled with cold water it works as a cold pack, which BYXAS suggests for bringing down swelling after a minor injury. Fill it with the cover off, then slide it back in once the stopper is tight and the outside is dry.

  • Ribbed surface holds heat
  • Doubles as an ice pack
  • No rubber smell

#4FORICOM 2L Hot Water Bottles (2-pack, no covers)

Best two-pack

9.1/10Picked Rating

Two 2 L bottles of thick 2.2 mm PVC, so two beds, or a bed and a sore back, get one each. A wide, angled mouth lets the kettle pour in without spills, and they’re made to BS 1970:2012, the British safety standard for hot water bottles.

What owners say: Sturdy, easy to fill and leak-free, owners say, with pretty colours and warmth that lasts a good while.

Heads up: Neither bottle comes with a cover, so wrap each in a towel or add a cover before it rests against bare skin.

A closer look: FORICOM gives three to six hours of warmth indoors and two to four outdoors, and expects a bottle to last about three years, so it’s worth noting the date they arrive. Any quality fault in the first month is covered by a free replacement or refund.

  • Wide mouth for easier filling
  • Meets British safety standard

#5Revitale Extra Long Hot Water Bottle with Faux Fur Cover (72 cm)

$30–$50

Best for your back

9.1/10Picked Rating

At about 72 cm (28 in), this long, thin bottle drapes around the neck and shoulders or across the whole lower back, where a standard bottle warms only one spot. It still holds 2 L, in a soft faux-fur cover finished with pom-poms.

What owners say: Owners love how soft and fluffy the cover is and find the length handy for cold feet; how well it holds up is a doubt some raise.

A closer look: Being long and thin, it fills from less than a kettle, and laid lengthwise under the covers it warms a strip of bed rather than one spot. It also spans both knees or a pair of cold feet at once.

  • Drapes around neck and shoulders
  • Fills from one kettle

Best for: Backs, necks and shoulders
